My poor little guy has an infection in his hock
frown.gif
It was really swollen so called the vet out, who took some joint fluid and bloods.

Have to say he was very brave with the sedative. Cant say the same about Amber who would have double barelled me had the vet not pulled me out the way. We then decided to take Sirrius out and leave mum in the stable for him to be sedated and examined.

At one point I was holding the little guy up as he was so sleepy, bless him. He then fell asleep standing up, snoring away with his tounge poking out!

Anyway the fluid came back showing an infection and the vet gave me several options, from doing nothing to PTS to the full works of flushing out the joint and using a camera to have a look. i was going to just have the wound flushed but the vets said they would do the whole lot for as cheep as possible.

Will still cost a lot as he's not insured because he is too young, but I want him better. As YO said "money can be found but foals cant be replaced". Vets scared me as they dont sound very positive

The vets are going to call me tomorrow afternoon with the results as he is going in at 11am. I'm not going to be sleeping much tonight.

Does anyone have any advice or experience of this?

Yes I have. It's very touch and go and can drag on for many months. My horse was successful in the end but it really did take about a year for it to all come right.

VERY best of luck.

Feel so sorry for you ,it may be a long road ahead.I had the vet back to my horse today ,he got injured last week and has been on antibiotics wound managment and box rest. Then today his hock swelled up.They have doubled the antibiotics but think its soft tissue infection[wound is on fetlock] I just hope mine doesn't get worse.
I really hope that tomorrow things will look better and you will be able to give us some better news.He is in the best place

I also went through this with my pony, nearly 7-8yrs ago now
It was very much touch and go and even after 2 week the vets kept saying she is not out of the woods yet, but she pulled through, i was told that because she was young and fit this helped (she was 7 or 8)
She is still fit and well and her hock has never given her any trouble scince, but it was a long recovery and she was out of work for over a year
the infection had eaten a hole through her tendon sheath and she had septiciema (sorry about spelling!!)
Finger crossed for you
Helen x

I hope it all goes ok with Sirrius, qbout 14 years ago we had a foal with joint ill who nearly made it, there was a mix up with the medication and we think this contributed to his not making it. We kept him for a month, with bottle feeding as he had it in all four legs. We can't remember what drug they used, it began with L and was for sheep, as at that time it wasn't liscenced for horses. Will cross all my appendages for your lad

Very sorry to hear about poor Sirrius, not good news at all for you............sending hugs and good vibes for him.

Is he slightly lame with it? The reason I ask about the lameness is because it may be joint ill, which can happen with some foals up to the age of around 4 months. If it is this and he is treated promptly like yours then the success rate can be promising although sometimes costly.

This is the problem with foals as most insurance companies wont insure them until they reach the age of 30 days.

Keep us posted. Try and stay positive, which is easier said than done.

Thank you so much everyone.

Sirrius should be in for his op now, I'm a nervous wreck.

Anastasia, he was slightly lame after the vet took the joint fluid, but didnt seem to be beforehand.

Just heard from the vets. Sirrius is back on his feet and reunited with mum.

His hock has been flushed out. Didnt have any other probs (ie infected navel/joint damage) which is good news. Well they didnt mention anything other than the infection anyway.

He will stay in overnight for certain but I'll prob let him stay in until Sunday or Monday just so he can be checked on etc.

He's not quite out of the woods yet but I feel relieved to have heard something. Will be going to see him later if they will let me.

Oh honey, I am so sorry to hear you are going through this. How did he get the infection, do you know?

I am glad to hear he is on his feet and has had the joint flushed. Have the vets said anything about what could have caused it or what the next stage of treatment is?
