Ok sis sent off for and got a BE day ticket from Horse magazine. What events would be suitable to try for a first timer? We are based at Rodbaston so could try their intro and Stafford apparantly have a pre intro (80cm?). However Sunny is a heavy cob 14.3hh so kind of struggles a tad with hills or heavy going

would this rule Stafford out because of the steep hill? advice gratefully received

course is nice and straightforward (we hack round most of it

, but not allowed over the fences

) would we be likely to get balloted out at Rodbaston then?

Not as far as know...if you go onto the BE site, and look at the event calendar, it will bring up the evnts, and should tell you how many were balloted last year....just know Stafford was VERY popular!

Hi

I do quite a bit of eventing and training for BE etc. If he is a heavy horse then maybe your sister should stick to unaffiliated events until ready to move on up the levels. Although called 'intro' it is still an affiliated level of competition and should really be treated as such. Another aspect is fitness. Even an intro should have a good 5-6 week fitness plan. Will she interval train prior? A heavier horse I find must be fitter than the TBs.
I work with BE and know the stafford event well. There is no Pre-Intro scheduled to go ahead. The Intro is kind but is by all means a respected Intro 'AFFILIATED' track which means maybe hunter trialing and unaff events may be an idea first?!

Hi
Yes I realise they are affiliated events and sis has already done hunter trials and XC sxhooling with him last year and we have already planned lots of XC schooling and hunter trial competitions for this year anyway. She competes at unaff dressage prelim and regulary scores 70% with him and he quite happily jumps 3' - its just with being on the heavy side he struggles a little with hills or heavy going. His fitness level is pretty good at the moment as he is in a lot of work and we regulary go for 3 hours over the Chase - if she decides which event to enter then obviously she will up his workload even more!

Super. As an official, working closely with BE there is nothingworse than unfit horses and indeed riders on occasions trying to complete the near impossible task of an affiliated event. The spring events often strugle with heavier ground, and often even at Intro there are many thoroughbred or blood types. She will really need to understand the interval training strategy and develop a plan that compliments her and the horse. Eland Lodge do a super unaff event in July which would probably be more realistic to get her started.Super ground and course.

don't worry we've seen enough horses unfit and not coping very well at events to understand what we need to do. Fitness plan in progress as friend is prepping it for us

Already got Eland Lodge ODE in the calendar thanks

Besides he has to try to keep up with fit 17hh ISH so does plenty of exercise and interval training, and lots of hill work too

Good. I always find a heart rate monitor ideal for my young horses. What IT scale are you at the moment? I have a few on different ones at the moment depending on level obviously/.

You are joking?! A heart rate monitor to get someone ready for an intro?

They would be better off spending the money on a few sessions with a decent trainer who will tell them if the horse is fit enough or not.

Couldn't agree more.
...and interval training? C'mon, lets keep a grip on reality, we are talking intro not intermediate.

if you can't work out that your horse is fit enough to intro, you just shouldn't be competing! - IMO

That made me chuckle too....having managed to go Novice last year and qualify for CCI* without doing a jot of interval training....on a WBx

Ok, so we didn't make the time, but the clears were the aim, not the time....

The March BE fixture (stafford (1)) is NOT running preintro or training. It is Stafford (2) which is hosting this. Further details on your link.
