Sit and stay problem

Got a prob with Dom (the white one in my sig). He's great with sit/lay down and stay but i can't for the life of me get him to come back once he's down if you see what i mean. He just stays where he is and looks at you blankly as if to say 'you told me to stay'!!

His recall is good when out and about to the whistle or voice but not when you've actually asked him to stay. I've tried calling his name, enthusiastic voice, kneeling down with open arms, treats etc etc and he just doesn't get it!

With our other dog we ask her to wait for her dinner while we put it on the floor and then give her a command when she can move but if you do this with Dom you end up having to go up to him to get him to move! He's not really a foody so i'm not sure what else to try.

Any ideas? Would putting him on a long lead work?
 
Yeah that's what i was thinking, need to be a bit careful with him though as he can be slightly nervy at times and i don't want to loose his confidence by forcing/confusing him

Is he a rescue dog? I would try one of the long training lines and build the distance up very gradually and don't move too far away until he understands what is being aksed. Just a couple of little tugs in a row whilst calling his name and then once he comes up do the normal - lots of praise and a wee treat.
 
Yeah he came to us for fostering from his owner, her son was autistic and had started kicking him. We failed miserably with the fostering and he's here to stay!

He's generally confident but can get a bit funny if you approach too quickly or put you hand out to him fast. He's also an escape artist on the lead if he feels trapped.

Will give that a try and see what happens, I've got a long line, like a cord lunge line but thinner that should work
 
Does he know "heel"? Have you tried asking him to sit and stay and lay his lead across his back, walk away from him and round in a circle and back to his side. Pick up his lead and say his name in an enthusiastic way as if you were recalling him or two pips of the whistle (or whatever you use for recall) and then ask him to heel and gently tug him to walk along beside you. Hopefully, if it works, it will give him the confidence to go along with you and get the idea that another instruction follows stay.

I don't train my dogs to come back after I have told them to stay. Stay means stay and when they have sat/lay down for long enough then I return to them.
I teach them the recall when they are away from me but not after the command stay.
I know it's not everyone's way but different dogs sometimes need a different approach.

I never teach recall once the stay command has been given either - Stay is exactly that - 'STAY'! If you ask your dog to move after giving the stay command you should return to your dog and give him a 'finish' command. I don't bother with all the finesse of competion obedience, just want my dogs to stay when told, walk nicely onlead and come back when called, which is what most pet owners want.

If you want to teach recall try using the 'wait' command first. Your dog will then get used to something else happening after the wait command and it won't confuse the stay issue. Good luck, your dogs are beauties by the way!
