I think it's hours in the saddle and time spent riding spooky horses. My horse from the age of 11 (still got her now) was a lovely Arab mare and she had an impressive sideways spook. Years spent riding her seems to have done me good as I now ride an incredibly spooky young Arab and always find myself completely with him when he spooks. I've fallen off him once, but his saddle slipped as well that time which I think contributed! Otherwise I've surprised myself with some of the impressive spooks I've sat!

For a fat cob, Blue has a surprising spin on her if she's sufficiently startled, and she managed to dump me once when a bird appeared between her front feet. After that, I invested in an R-Stor (or Erector as one of my yard friends misheard it!) and it's saved me a couple of times.

Luck! :p

Mine does this fairly regularly but it’s not dirty i.e no shoulder drop to get me off.

The other day he did a 180 degree and as I was now facing my sharer who was behind me I said to her how surprised I was to still be on she pointed behind me and said “unlike him” and I turned back to see a cyclist in the hedge who’d come down the bridle way too fast and had to swerve into the hedge to avoid me. I hadn’t even seen him! I heard a kerfuffle and thought it was damn pigeons as usual :D

Sometimes luck is involved. I was hacking out and had turned to talk to the person behind over my left shoulder. Not sure what my tb saw but he did a full 180 spin to the left. As it was, his movement brought him round to where I was, if he'd gone to the right, I'd have been off as I was already part way in that direction. Current horse, bay tb v2.0 has a tendency to spin and I sit most of them but not all. Thinking about it, it's less the spins that get me as the sideways teleport especially in canter. We did some dressage yesterday at a nearby yard yesterday. We had 2 full spins on the bridlepath, it was windy and he was extra spooky and there were some dangerous looking puddles but it was the leap sideways in canter in the warmup that was a bit more touch and go, lost a stirrup but was OK.

If I think I'm in a situation where it might happen, I slip a finger through the neckstrap and I do find the new type of sticky bum jods help.
