Re story on H&H news page - how can the Clerk of the Course say it was 'just the law of averages' when 6 horses die in one day at one course???
Surely this warrants some kind of investigation, or are racehorses lives really that unimportant?

This was very shocking tbh and a comment like he made shows how disposable these poor animals are to some of those in the industry. Sounds like more than the law of averages to me though.

MY step dad was a race horse trainer and I have always hated the sport.

Its terrible that these horses died but spare a thought 4 the lads and lasses who look after them. I expect they are devastated and care much more than some people in high places! I'm just saying this before someone goes off on one saying people in racing just don't care about their animals!

I'm not suggesting for a moment that individuals do not care deeply for the animals in their care, my issue is with race courses/racing authorities who appear rather flippant in their response.

BLOODY RACING!!! Come on all you supporters - just tell me ONE SJ venue where six-horses died in one day. That callous response from the officials did not surprise me one bit. It is the norm within racing. I will never forget Clare Balding stating she was fed-up announcing that several horses had perished at Cheltenham. She could not understand what all the fuss was about.

At least the Australian authorities have got more of a conscience. They are considering a ban on jump racing after a number of fatalities. Bloody well would not get that here - especially not at sodding Aintree.

RIP poor horses.

The fact that 6 died in a day does make you think that perhaps something went wrong, although from the sounds of it the ground was good etc, so I don't suppose if we'll ever know. I think the comment from the clerk of the course really doesn't paint racing in a good light - I'm sure connections of all the horses will have been devastated, yes, it probably was just law of averages, but that isn't going to make connections feel any better, and some effort should at least be made to find out if it could have been prevented.

That said, I think the Australian authorites have gone completely overboard.

I don't think is far to stereotype racing people over a response made, it definitely is not the 'norm' for a callous response. Don't know the context she mentioned it in, can't say I watch the channels she appears on, so I guess I can't comment on her response, although I am pretty sure there was only one fatality at Cheltenham this year?
Don't know a lot about Australian racing but I would assume the ground would be far to hard to race on, perhaps they should invest in AW courses, over here our ground has a lot more give.
Also the course at Aintree has been greatly improved, throughout the 90's beechers was level off and there are now gaps beside the big fences for loose/PU horses to pass through.

I live quite close to Killarney race course (bout 12 miles) and cant understand it - it has been doing nothing but rain here for the past 6 weeks - it stopped raining last saturday and has remained dry since then (only managed to get my horses out in the fields last Saturday) so cant see that the groung could be too hard or even too soft - my blacksmith shoes at the races and is due to come to me the weekend and will see if he can shed any light on the matter!

Very very sad, that's I got a problem with the racing industry.
Its so money orientated and the only ones that cares for the horses are the grooms. Owners don't give a toss long as they are winning,if they loose they write them off like that.
My O.H is a professional racing gambler and we have heated arguments about it !

Two of the horses who died actualy collided over a jump - one immediately broke its neck - 2 more had been off one for 6 months and another for 12 months with ligament/tendon trouble - on finishing the race the vet advised that their racing/riding careers would be very much in doubt - it was decided to euthenise (sp) them - So sometime headlines do sensationalise events.
