I got my beautiful 10yr old 14.2hh Connemara X pony just under 3 months ago now and he means the world to me, I love him so much already. My plan was to keep him forever, for as long as he lives.

The problem is I'm a good 5ft 8! and I just look so big on him, I hadn't noticed until I saw pictures of myself. I wasn't too bothered but everyone points out how "huge" I look on him every time I ride. I was even approached today and told I should ride him because it was cruel.
I never thought of it like this? At just over 8 and half stone so I don't think I'm to heavy? He'll take my riding instructor (an adult man) around a decent sized course with complete ease.
I don't feel too big for him at all, in fact far from it! He feels perfect and I don't notice his size when I'm up there, and it doesn't seem make a difference in anything we do . I've never felt the way I do when I ride him, in a good way though! I don't think there will ever be another horse like him, I know it sounds cheesy but we just click.
I love so so much, he's perfect for me. He's everything I want and more. I trust him completely, doing anything and anywhere. He's just amazing!
I don't want to sell him, I never will. It would break my heart. I just want your opinions on matters if size???

This was my first ride as horse and owner, I know the saddle is too small for me in this picture, but it's the best view to really see the size difference. (We are in the process of getting a new saddle!)

Your weight on him is not an issue, and if your balance is good, I think ye are fine together, I have a 14.2 connie, usually weigh about 9.5 to 10st and he carries me with ease. The only problems you would have was if your height was causing you to be off balance which in turn would affect the pony's way of going too.

You are fine on him, how anyone can call you huge is beyond belief, if you are going to be jumping decent fences you will need to be aware of not getting too far forward but there is no reason you cannot do anything you want to, don't listen to people who are so ignorant, your RI obviously thinks he is suitable for you and his opinion is more relevant.

You look fine on him. I had same problem ( 14.2 and 5.8" ) but I have a very long back so did look too tall. However, like your he was everything I wanted and we had 20+ years of fun together. You look great - and also slim!

You look in good balance together, he is going sweetly for you. You love him, you are not too heavy, don't worry, enjoy him. Lucky you to find your equine soulmate. Happy Christmas to you both!

You look absolutely fine on him - some people just love to poke their nose in. Just laugh it off if it happens again and say what a fantastic horse he is and how lucky you feel to own him. Good luck.

Oh good lord, tell them to b*gger off!!

I'm your height, a smidge heavier, and I have a yard full of ponies! I can post hundreds of photos!

Make sure you have a good saddler out that understands the requirements of an adult on a pony, or a tall teen on a pony. We do need spot on saddles!

Im 5'8 & used to ride 13.2s at work & jump them etc not huge but decent heights I looked a bit big on them but was fine on the 14.2s so I wouldn't worry :)

Please just ignore people who say you are too big ! I grew up with a 13.1 pony i'm 5ft 3inch i was told the same, I moved on to 16 plus horses but was never happy, now downsized on to 14.1 couldn't be happier ! people can be quite rude without even realising in my experience.

Seriously some 'horsey' people can be ridiculously jelous and bitchy! I can't understand what the problem is, as long as you are balanced, you look great together!

This - you look fine on him

you look fine, take a look at pics of mark todd on charisma, or william fox pitt on any of his horses. both of them are tall with long legs and seem to manage ok!!!!! as long as you dont put on loads of weight(and i mean loads) your pony will be quite happy, as previous poster has said, just watch your balance....have fun with him and dont consider selling because other people criticise you...

You look absolutely fine on him.

This is me on my 13.3 (14hh on absolute tippy toes) New Forest gelding - I'm about 5'6 (and am loosing weight!).

Perhaps, I'm strictly speaking a little too tall, but I'm not interested in jumping & all we do is hack, school & aim to have fun together! He's never struggled to carry me - men regularly point to point & 'round up' riding native ponies on the on the New Forest - and my equine physiotherapist & chiropractor, assure me there is no sign of stiffness or soreness from carrying me.

Just enjoy him & although it's hard, don't worry what others say - I went from a 16.2hh ISH to 13.3hh NF. People that knew my old horse, made comments on how tiny he is - but when I moved, no one has commented on his size or mine.

Your not looks lovely - have fun with him :) x

You look just fine, don't worry. My connie (JMB 148) carries me all day with no problems, I'm 5'9 and around 14st plus his saddle. I questioned my saddler and he confirmed that so long as his saddle has the right weight distribution he could carry considerably more!

Sadly, some people seem to think that ponies are solely for children. You look absolutely fine OP, you are tall but not too tall and he won't even notice your weight. Ignore the people that tell you otherwise and enjoy your lovely pony.

Thank you so much everyone! It just so nice too hear someone else say (other than my RI) 'I'm not to big' you can only tell yourself many times before you just stop listening. Thank you all for your kind words, it's so nice to know that other people think I look fine, thank you! You've stopped me worrying there.
We got a highly recommended saddler coming out next week, we've explained our needs and he seems experienced and confident he can help, so I think we're on the right track. Thank you all so much!
