I have noticed more and more people competing in things that look like a martingale crossed with draw reins. Could someone explain the benefits of this?
I am guessing its to keep the head lower but releases quicker when you give with the reins?
I do find it worrying when I see so many of them in a BN class - surely good schooling would be of a better benefit?
I did see the return of standing matingales but this gadget seems to have taken over.

Is it a market Harborough? like a running martingale goes through the bit rings and then clips on to rings on the reins. There quite good with strong horses but they do learn to lean on them

That must be it - Did not realise it was a market harborough I thought it looked more like draw reins.

How odd - i actually feel like i have to stick up for people rite now because i must say, at the BSJA events i compete at locally (medstead, merrist wood, quob) im actually happy to see very few gadgets. Have to say i saw more gadgets being used wrongly and unneccisarily in unaffiliated events held at the same venues

and usually by 12 year olds on ponies!

Market Harboroughs are excellent pieces of kit, but they are not allowed BE, I think for the same reason as standing martingales (horse getting foot through). I have jumped in them occasionally but dont really like using them for jumping. Hay Ho, to each his own I suppose!

My dad used to hunt a horse in one who was really strong, reared a lot and was generally a bit of an arse. I think it worked quite well for him.

I ride Trike in a Market Harborough ! It's a great piece of kit for him...encourages him to work long and low, and yet gives when he does. Even over fences, it works well as it is loose enough to allow him to stretch forward and yet prevents him from coming up over the bit. I just find it works better than a running martingale for him, ad he seems to approve too

I used to jump a very strong mare in one. She had a very short neck and could really "hoik" once she got going but the Market Harborough was very useful and she went very well in it

I have just been suggested one for my boy. He's gone all spooky on me again, (naughty youngish horse who goes through phases!) he throws his head up and spins/trys to gallop off. I'll let you know the results!
