SJ jackets???

I've read a bit on here about how horrible SJ jackets are and how you shouldn't wear one. This has left me feeling a little disconcerted as I'm hoping to be taking part in a few hunts for the first time, but all I have is my jacket which I wear for showjumping.

It is acrylic/not woolen, black, with brass buttons and a gold strip around the collar. Would I be really looked down on? I'll be wearing a stock, and I have a pair of beige jods, even though I prefer white. I have a traditional (not patey) velvet covered hat.

(obviously I would take off the gold badge and have a poppy there)
 
Hi I would go in your showjumping jacket and see how you get on. I can't think of any hunt who would look down their nose at you. Most hunts are delighted to get new subscribers and would welcome you.

I think one of the reasons people don't think show jumping jackets are the most suitable are because they are not very warm, but it would be madness to invest in a black coat or tweed jacket until you decide to become a regular member.

are they talking about your style of black jacket or the new BS showjump jackets, which are far more casual?

I think your style of jacket would be fine, just remember your thermals underneath as you may be a bit chilly.
 
Yes, I have plenty of thermals which should keep me warm underneath :)

My YO has offered me the ride of her horses, with the intention of me hunting/competing them, so I thought I'd give it a go :) we've just moved to the area, and I think there are a few hunts locally, but I think it is the Meynell and Quorn who will be the ones we will be trying.

Go for it. No, technically it isn't correct and you will be cold, but your hunt should still welcome new followers. Remember to contact the secretary if you aren't a member. A well turned horse and polite behaviour is more important in my opinion.

Get plenty of thermal stuff on.
 
Loads of layers and you'll be grand! There's no point in buying a hunt coat unless you know you are going to continue with it!

Ask around and you might be able to pick up a good 2nd hand one very reasonably or just borrow one. I got mine on Ebay, total bargain!
 
Hello I went on my 1st hunt didn't wear my showjumping jacket because not only is it not warm enough but has pretend pockets!! :p for hunting you need pockets!! So wore my whittaker everyday yard jacket.. For next time have bought a tweed jacket unlike you however don't own any beige breeches all mine are white!! But will be also investing in a stock the breige breeches will have to come in time!! For a working hunter class in the summer borrowed a tweed jacket but the rest was my showjumping gear!! Came 2nd but actually don't think I would have won even if I had of had the correct colour breeches was beaten by the overall champion!! so was clearly quite chuffed that the judge thought my mare was nice I look at her with rose tinted specks and odviously think she's amazing!! :p

YOU WILL FREEZE. Lol, no one will look down at you though as a first timer. Almost more sensible option would be a black or navy coat which will keep you warm and therefore you will not freeze! We also have a few people who come out in the cold with us in shooting jackets. TBH I don't think that as long as you are smart and making an effort anyone will mind that much.
 
I think it was more a comment on how chilly they are, because they are quite thin, and hunting jackets are wool and quite snuggly. No one will look down on you at all, maybe if it is cold and you have some room under there wear another layer that can't be seen. have fun
 
Don't forget to take a look on eBay - there have been a few on there recently for reasonable prices.

Of course you won't be looked down at, just make sure you choose your under garments wisely, you could invest in thermal fleece hunt shirt to go with your stock, a waistcoat that you can fit underneith your jacket and don't for a thermal vest too, make sure your feet are toasty, if your fingers and toes are warm, the rest of your body will be, so nice warm socks and gloves and you'll be as snug as bug.
