SJ Squad for the European Champs

Mind you, if you would have held a sweepstake at the start of the year for how many Whittaker's there would be in the team for the Europeans, how many people would have picked 0?

Indeed. That doesn't happen all that often!

Let's hope that they do better than the majority of their nations cup performances this year. If not, maybe should do what football teams do all the time and the Italian SJ team have done (to win in Dublin) and change the manager!

i wasnt too surprised about the team, i didnt think we would have any whitakers in it anyway as none of them really have any top horses. hopefully we have a better time then we did in the nations cup, but yeah maybe we should do what football teams do and change the manager! i dont know why ricketts didnt pick william funnell for nations cups as he has some good top horses

Will retired Mondriaan from Nations Cup duty last year, and sold Billy Birr at the Hamburg CSI. He does not have any other candidates at the same level yet.

LOL!

Perhaps that should read "any (fit) top horses"

I'm sure Peppermill, Utah, Locarno, Portofino, Wonami etc would probably figure fairly high on most people's shopping lists...

I think actually that between them the Whitakers probably have more horses capable of jumping at Championship level than any other family in the sport...

What's happenned to Locarno btw....haven't seen or heard of him for at least a year

i heard locarno has a small injury and as we have said in other threads, casino for example has been placed this tear in the top ten in several GCT grand prixs, which is fairly good form.......

I've always loved Utah but his recent form has not bee that good. Such a shame that Locarno seems to be one of those talented horses who is very injury-prone. I did think Ellen with Ocolado might have made the long list. Of course had Michael not been suspended he.d have been on the list, but Portofino is probably past her best - still has great wins, but probably not likely to keep her form for the duration of the Championships and Wonami is still slightly "green" sometimes.

I think the team selections are pretty much correct going by form.. we could do quite well, fingers crossed.. sorry to change the subject but where is the championships being televised?

Billy Congo has the potential, but has yet to do an international Grand Prix or lower level Nations Cup, as Will never rushes his horses. I fear you have no idea of what is required at Super League level.

Ireland has announced its showjumping team for the Europeans today; Billy Twomey, Darragh Kerins, Cian O Connor, Denis Lynch and Thomas Ryan. Thrilled for Thomas - hasnt taken him very long to get up the ranks tbh.

Some big name casulaties. Perhaps the british should have been as brave in their choice.

I thought Cameron might have done enough with his performance in the Aga Khan - would personally prefer him to Cian. I imagine Jessica was left out as she's not had her top horses in action, and has arguably not been the best "team player".

Who would you have chosen for GB? (given they have to have qualified under current FEI rules)

Ah now that is unfair as I don't know the rules, but then again neither do the FEI. I really was not really thinking of anybody in particular but without a Whitaker in the squad, there is still not a new name there and I found that a little disappointing.

As far as I know there is no dispute over the rules relating to qualification for the European Championships and you can read them on the FEI website.

It's not much good writing that we should have a new name in there if you can't think of any. Obviously our selectors could not either!

dinner was burning so had to press submit!! Now its back under control - I would have picked Romanov. Oh and for good measure I would have had Gemma Paternoster on the long list. Must go dinner's ready / kids are screaming. After dinner I will get my reading glasses out.
