hi, dont know if you remember. I have bought a 5yr old mare by indoctro. I am looking for possible stallions for her. If anyone can explain how i will post some photos. She is a lovely "person" has a pretty head, good front end, good feet, very bold and forward yet a total sweety. Looking for a jumping stallion with a good temp as i dont fancy a nutty youngster. Must have good legs with strong hind qs. Any suggestions? She is 16.3 so size not an issue. Don't want to spend a fortune on stud fees so 800 or less.

CURTIS. it's just as well that size isn't a problem, he is BIG! He's also young, which reflects in his stud fee. Di Lampard said to me, "No more stallions", but then she changed her mind!

We've used him this year for an embryo transfer, and to an advanced event mare, with a 16 day scan tomorrow (fingers crossed!) I, and my advisors too, think that he's delightful.

We'd have used Peppermill, but not at £1600!!

i must admit i LOVE peppermill. But as you say its lots of pennies and she'd need to prove herself first. Plus he looks like a bit of a hot hed. Do you have a link to a site for curtis? Must have a good straight hind leg

as this is his first season at stud, I'm not too sure if he actually has his own dedicated website.

You can find a pic, and a bit of blurb about him in the Oakham Vets website. If you are serious about him, then PM me and I'll find his riders mobile contact for you. When he isn't away competing, then I'm sure that you would be made most welcome, as we were. Go and see him for yourself.

Regarding the temperament of Peppermill, I wouldn't give his led up behaviour a seconds thought. Watch Whittaker ride him! It's just the price! I'm not sure of the stud details for Pepermill, it may be a NFFR. Curtis is NFNF, but with a retention. Much more to my liking!!

thanks anybody have experience of temp of these boys and what the foals are like? What about handel? He's not too far from me, do you think he'd fit the bill?
 
atm i am just getting an idea of what would suit my mare as will be next year now. Re temp whilst my mare is lovely and very genuine she is quite sharp and i wouldn't want anything "hotter" than her. Just want one that will complement her.

Wow i like him, he's scrummy. There are no confo shots but i guess he must be good to be graded. My only concern is i have been advised to stay away from landgraf lines as they can throw sickle hocked youngstock. Not sure if this is true? open to comments. And although only very slightly my mare could be improved by a stronger hind q. I do like argentinius though. I could be way off so just my thoughts
 
Without seeing your mare but I would have to agree that Handel is awesome and otifully underused in this country I think. I would use him in a shot if he were what I were breeding for. Seen stunning youngsters by him and was honoured to watch his son, Handel's Classic, be presented to the BEF last year and he truly wowed the crowd!!!

Other suggestions would be as said above CG, there is also the superb Unbelievable Darco at Brendons and also their up and coming boy Don VHP, All the above had super scopey jumps and i know them all personally and can comment that their temps are exemplary!

Chaos, standing at Meadow Stud improved the conformation enormously of our mare, the foal (now a 2 year old) has the nicest temperament you could wish for. He's also very fashionably bred.

Thanks to the people above for mentioning my stallions. Unbelievable Darco throws a fabulous temperament, and jumps too! Mister Darco that has been been mentioned on this forum is by him, I have lots here too, if you want to see him/them or any of the others...!
 
Omg! I cannot believe you have not mentioned super trooper de ness! Probably one of the best young stallions atm!

I do not have a connection, other than being a fan and awaiting a foal (fingers crossed)! Old lodge are great to deal with, it has been great to watch
this stallion mature. Good x rays etc if you are worried about legs.

How funny! This is the second time I've seen this said today! I do not own or have any involvement with any stallions with these lines so do not have a vested interest. I would just like to say I've had a lot to do with Landgraf stock and not known any sickle hocked ones. We currently have 3 Numero Uno's on the yard, who are also not sickle hocked.

I wonder where this rumour has come from? Very odd!

I'm into my coloureds, so I'd give Utah van Erpkon some consideration if I were you.
 
it was only mentioned to me a few weeks ago but on my yard there is a gelding by landwind by langraf and that is a little sickle hocked but im sure there are many who aren't. I'm not particularly interested in coloureds so for that kind of money think i'd choose peppermill.
 
ok so, all the stallions look fab. I particularly like bon balou, curtis, handel and peppermill in the unlikley event i get a mahooooosive bonus ;) which do you think would best fit the bill.
 
If it was me and I was going to spent that little bit more then I'd go for Balou du Rouett himself, I think Bon Balou looks lovely but if I can have his actually sire then that's what I'd use (and infact have done so, I have the most lovely foal by him born in May, there are some photos of her on here somewhere). Otherwise Peppermill would be my choice of the others!
 
thanks, its so tempting, they are all so pretty. I understand that in the grand scheme of things the stud fee is only a small part of getting a foal to riding stage, its just until she proves she throws decent foals i dont want to spend a fortune on the first foal. I want to give her the best chance by choosing a complementary stallion if that makes sense? I'm new to all this, does that sound reasonable?
 
I would still use the best possible stallion I could afford, even if your mare is herself unproven she has excellent bloodlines and I can't see the point in putting her to a slighly cheaper stallion (unless you think he is your perfect choice) if you can afford to pay that more for a stallion you real like. Remember a more proven stallion will (hopefully) produce a more sellable foal. My only exception may be to use an up and coming stallion in the hope that he himself and his stock live up to the expectations. I once got offered a top olympic stallion for £700 a couple of years later his stud fee was over £3000!!

My other concern is when looking at pedigrees how far away from my mares lines do i need to go? Excluding the tb line of sit this one out (northern dancer) there is capitol, cor de la bryere, calypso, ahorn, nimmerdor. Do i need to avoid all these?

You don't need to avoid them, but you do need to know what you are doing if you are going to line breed. For example, Landgraf and hocks was mentioned earlier - you don't want to double up on Landgraf for that reason (or Calypso II) - but you might want to double up on Ahorn for example, and sex balance it too (by which I mean having it come in on the top of the sire side and bottom of the dam side).
 
thanks sooooo much all for replies. Its not so much that i want to line breed its just trying to find a sj stallion without any of these stallions in pedigree cuts my choice right down. Sorry for all q's but why particularly ahorn?

The rumour comes from the KWPN! They advise using mares with good hindleg conformation when using Numero Uno.
