I haven't showjumped in a long long time so I have no idea of what's acceptable now! I'm taking a girl from our yard showjumping at Blakesley and I haven't got a clue about what colour jacket she can wear (I've only ever worn black with white jods) she's got her tweed jacket for hunting which she wears with a tie and shirt and will only wear beige jodphurs as well. I want to make sure she's dressed correctly it's embarrassing enough going to an event with me as it is! Thanks for any advice :-)

It's fine, in tweed she'll look like an eventer taking a trip over to the dark side!

From what I can gather most show jumpers seem to be sporting a lot of bling these days and jackets seem to be a variety of colours and are short, often made of "technical" thin fabric. Ladies don't wear stocks or ties but high collared show shirts.

I've noticed this as well since going over to the dark side from showing with one horse. I was actually quite shocked at the lack of turnout on some of the ladies (And I use this term in reference to super short jackets showing their bottoms, uber tight fit around the bust and no stocks but crystals on high collared shirts.)

Hair nets appear to be no longer used and the more colour you have the better. My SJ'er looks completely out of place, dressed like a hunter. with a plain, dark or white saddle cloth and brown tendon boots and no ear covers. I have finally made life easier by not plaiting him as no one else is bothered...

Basically anything goes! From traditional tweed with a tie to navy and a stock to red with no stock, pink with crystals or yellow (Which sadly clashed terribly with the chestnut coat of the horse and the ladies bright blonde hair). Good luck!

as others have said, pretty much anything goes - tweed with a shirt/tie and beige breeches is absolutely fine. some people plait, some don't. some choose colour and others go for white... it's really up to the rider.

Tweed and Beige is fine. It's an unaff comp so I expect you will see all sorts of turnout.
I'm going to the same show. It will be my new girls first outing. Hope the ground gets some rain before saturday as it's like concrete atm round there.

I wear an American collar shirt. I like it. Saves hassle without having to use a stock or a tie. I also use a soft shell jacket - they can be washed so saves money on dry cleaning

Oh don't get me started on the lack of hairnets! The coloured jackets/stirrups don't bother me but the loose hair looks awful!
Watching pony riders at RDS and was horrified at the amount of girls with long hair in pony tails bouncing off their back. Majority of hair was below scapula - just looked so untidy!
At least plait it if you hate hairnets, but hairnets will always look much smarter and professional. Considering RDS is an international show I thought they would have made more of an effort to plait their ponies and wear a hairnet.
Our PC has had to make an a rule of no hairnet no ride. Plaits are acceptable!

darkbay19:- The girl you are taking will not be out of place at all at the show. She will look smart & that is the the main thing.

I agree with what's been said about lack of hairnets, it doesn't take long to put your hair up & it looks so much better.

Regarding the tight jackets, usually 'Animo', are bought a size too small & is worn like a second skin. In my opinion it doesn't look smart, just too small, but that's current fashion? As for 'Bling' it seems the more the better, specially if you're jumping indoors & there are spotlights to make it all sparkle. :)

Thanks for all the replies. She never rides without a hair net, very traditional. If you were caught on our yard with a bling browband you'd be off 😂 Recently watched her friend jump at an unaff comp and she was amazed by what she calls "the tat" that some SJ's wear.

She sounds like she'll be wearing exactly what I would :) Nice tweed and cream/beige jods. Definitely a hairnet ;)
I wouldn't plait though, rightly or wrongly!

Some of these replies are hysterical. I'm sure Louse Pavitt & other top riders would be amused to hear that they wear tat, fitted too tight & look scruffy because they aren't wearing a hair net. Animo jackets are expensive, Italian, tailored jackets made from technical fabric so designed to fit closely & neatly rather than hanging off like a baggy old jacket my dad would wear in the garden! Many show jumpers don't plait as they think it restricts the horse when he needs to drop his head & stretch his neck over a big fence. The riders all looked fab at the Royal International this weekend, I don't think they can be classed as scruffy because they don't look like something from a 1950's BHS manual. For what its worth when I am at BE I often think how awful lots of the eventers look with badly fitted, scruffy old jackets, faded old fashioned velvet hats & awful baggy old beige breeches, & often on the ladies awful VPL. But that's ok because they look very smart in their hair net!

I didn't say they were scruffy, just looked untidy. I woud never plait horse for a unaff sj or even just an aff class. At the RDS however it was the championship class in the main arena for the ponies and some were plaited and had hairnets and they looked much neater and professional than the riders who didn't plait or wear a hair net.

At top level a lot of riders have plaited horses. It doesn't affect their horses ability to stretch! I would say the majority of horses in a championship class are plaited. Even the majority of horses in the puissance were plaited.

The jackets are fine imo, and don't care about bling. It's the long hair that dangles down the middle of their back that looks awful, I don't see why people see hairnets as old fashioned tbh! It's a neat, tidy image and also acts as a safety measure. takes 2secs to put on, so why wouldn't you?

I don't think I've ever worn a stock in 2p years of BS, I just wear the small collar. No bling but short collar is fine. I have a lovely navy Pikeur Tosca jacket which is a technical jacket made of, shock, modern fabric but it's still fairly plain so suitable for RC etc. I wear cream jods or white sometimes if I'm feeling brave! Hairnet worn too.

If I had the arse for one of those short jackets, I'd wear one!! :D

I am someone who wears 'tat' - my jacket is hot pink with white piping.

that said, horse is dark bay and suits pink. he has a hot pink numnah with white piping, along with hot pink boots for all 4 legs. he doesn't look like much and has a funny canter, so if we're going to stand out, we may as well go all the way :P
my jacket is light and short-ish. If I was to buy a similar one, I'd go for a size up as I don't like how tight it is. Although I can move in it and jump in it fine, I'd rather have a bit of extra room. I don't wear a hairnet and try and put my hair into a bun at the back of my hat but it does fall out so I can end up with a ponytail. Plaiting my hair to keep it neat I can't do as then my hat is too tight.
I do have a black jacket as well, with a plain velvet collar, that normally is used if we don't have all our matching pink available
I can't plait my horse as we have a below-shoulder length mane. He will be left down, or he has a running plait. As long as he is brushed, mane and tail are neat and tidy and have been brushed at least so they're clean and have no shavings etc then he usually looks quite neat.

OP, I think your turnout sounds like it will be fine. I think BS has regulations on jackets, but I know Showjumping Ireland are fine with everything other than the green coloured jackets the Irish riders use.

Me and my horses wear all the 'tat' to showjump too! Sometimes i wear my hair up in my hat other times I dont, but I do wear a blingy animo jacket and my horse does wear her blingy ears, browband and saddlecloth!

I said that lots of top riders don't plait as they thinki it makes it uncomfortable for the horses to stretch. Yes lots do but many do not. I've groomed at lots of international shows including the Hickstead Derbyvshie this year & neither the rider or owners wanted any of the horses plaited, so it's personal preference & opinion I would say

Sorry if anyone was offended by "tat". It's only someone's opinion, not saying it is tat. So she doesn't like sparkles- does it matter? This is why I asked as I have no idea of what's acceptable now, there were no sparkles when I used to jump. However it's interesting to see what some people think. i guess it's personal taste and really down to the discipline. All the girls done is hunted since she was young, and you don't tend to see bling out hunting. There's also a difference between traditional and scruffy, my jacket covers my bum but isn't badly fitted and I still look smart!

Also the pony won't be plaited

Interesting replies regarding trends in showjumping... my sister and I definitely fall into the "tat" category :D

We are the queens of matchy matchy. Coloured tendon/fetlock boots which match saddlecloths and jacket collars.. sometimes the fly bonnets match too. I will add bling to it to although my sister draws the line at this :P. We have it because we like it and we can. Not remotely bothered if the traditionalists think it looks tacky, we don't dress to please anyone else unless it is in the rules, in which case of course we comply!

Love that SJ allows people a bit more freedom to show their personalities/tastes through what they wear.
