just got a new skewbald cob, all my other horses are bay so are very easy 2 clean up- whats your best tips on how to get her white bits white and her bay bits sparkling?!! thanks!
Hmm, well, use a pot of chalk powder/chalk block for legs, and any stains, and plaiting a white tail really does help too. If you clean off any stains, but only wash one concentrated area, that should help lots, without damaging skin/removing too many essential oils
The purple shampoo called Quick Silver is good if your doing an all over bath, wet him all over and put it neat on his white patches leave it 5mins,rinse and he will be ultra bright white. Or an alternative if your not fully bathing is Cowboy Magic Green Spot remover, its fab, spray a bit on a stain leave it a bit, then wipe it off with a damp cloth, I have had excellent results with both these products.
1. Wonder why you got one
2. Be prepared for a lot of hard work
3. Hot water is best as it really does get dirt and grease out better than cold.
This is how I turn Stinky into Quite by Chance.
If weather is hot he gets hosed down until worst of mud is off, if not, I use a sponge and tepid water.
Now that he is soaked, I get a big bucket of warm water and scrub him with a brush all over - I like to use tresume deep cleaning shampoo mixed with some equine blue - this brings out the white and really deepens the bay. Once he is a pale blue soap beast, he is then rinsed with warm water.
Next I take on mane, forelock and tail - lots of hair as he is a gypsy cob - again I use equine blue in the shampoo to bring out the black.
Finally I scrub the legs - first with washing up liquid and then with tresume, equine blue and some vanish liquid - you can use vanish on tails and manes but not too much.
Now he is clean, I do a final all over rinse with hot water with a dash of equine blue and pig oil - don't use too much of each though.
Now he is brushed out with coat condition, hair put into bunches and his body suit, leg wraps, tail bag and top rug ready for the next day.
I don't use whitener apart from maybe a tiny bit on knees and hocks - and avoid it other than on the very tips of the feather if they are not sparkling white.
Show day I clean off any stains with a little shampoo and vanish and apply tiny bit of whitener. Then travel him. At the show he is groomed, sprayed with alva show shine and then gone over with a cloth and mit. Feather fluffed up and mane and tail combed through and a bit of supreme sparkle sprayed on to finish off. A little cream on his nose - he must not have any obvious make up and we are ready to go.
But I just wash him regularly, so throughout the eventing season he gets his mane/tail/legs washed once a week, lots of bedding to make sure its difficult for him to make himself too dirty, and make sure I wash mud off as it appears so it doesnt stain
Any sort of shampoo that's blue or purple seems to do the trick, I use blue tesco foam bath.
I lalso ike to use some blue rinse powder.
I put chalk on his legs when they're wet and then brush through with a bit more chalk once they've dried.
After I've shampooed his tail I spray loads of furniture polish on it, comb it through and plait it into lots of little plaits. When it's dry I spray more furniture polish and brush through.
For a show I use show shine like it's going out of fashion.
