I have a coloured cob Mare who I was sold as having mites and when I had her vetted the vet confirmed this. We treated as mites and it didn't help. I have so many creams from the vet it is unbelievable. Next is having the leg injected which is something I really don't want to do as I would like to find out what is causing the problem. I have had her skin tested at Newmarket to see if there are any mites under the skin but nothing. I am starting to wonder whether she has an allergy to something so will have her tested. I have been using camersoa and this has helped but again not cured it.
This is a couple of pictures at its worst. It now looks alot better since using Camerosa.

Has anyone got/had a horse with an allergy like this? I am wondering if it might be a straw allergy. Anyone got any ideas.
 
Have you had a steroid cream such as betnovate?

My girlie with auto immune has sores like this - always in the joint creases first and then spread to other Parts of limbs. Thankfully it is rare diagnosis and a worst case scenario

The other options are mud fever, straw allergy, mites as you say... I would probably go the dectomax route first and then look at elimination routine - switch to straw for a few weeks to monitor difference - if no different switch feeds etc. but do each individually so you can identify any links.

For us, sunlight, mollases, chaff, garlic and midges are all triggers
 
Where abouts does your horse have the problem and is it confined to the legs or heels etc and is the affected area white?

Have sent you a link to a page that has lots of information on skin problems and to me it sounds like your horse is suffering from Pastern leukocytoclastic vasculitis. My mare suffers from it and it is a problem that starts from within. ie photosensitivity caused by sunburn or an allergy to some plants or grasses.

I have to keep my mare, who has 3 white legs and a big white blaze covered from head to toe in the summer in rugs, masks and sudocream! I find that is the best product to act as a barrier cream and or to sooth any sores that may appear.

Do your research and then maybe put a few suggestions to your vet. Unfortunately I dont think there is a guaranteed cure for the disease as it stems from an immunity problem, but it can be managed successfully.

seems to be the years for this My donkey has had this prob 3 years now, i wash it with hibbi scrub and comb, gradually clears up. Gradually starts again going un noticed till really bad again. This year decided to do a skin scrap. waiting for results , I had to clip her to wash her . Hard crusty lumps and bumps hair comes off leaving bloody sores. Glad when i know whats causing it these are everywhere legs chest back etc

Leviathan... Have a look through here for my pemphigus erythematosus thread and have a look at pemphigus foliaceus yahoo group... Incredibly hard to diagnose but looks oh so familiar :(
