Hi all. My boy (chestnut native, 4 white socks) is currently on an elimination diet as he has allergies. We suspect its something in the balancer which caused the reaction and is now clearing up nicely. Except he has uneven hard bumpy skin on his inside hind legs, canon bone region. They aren't itchy, do not weep and aren't hot or swollen. The scabs are difficult (almost impossible) to pull loose and the skin feels uneven and lumpy but doesn't seem to bother him. I've washed the area with a specialist anti fungal/bacterial shampoo and have applied sudocreme. When wet, you can see small patches of black specs in the hair (almost like dandruff) as his feet are white. Has anyone come across this before or know what it might be? I suspect it may be related to the allergies? Thanks in advance! 😃

Don't pull scabs loose, that hurts!
It sounds like they're old mud fever scabs that have grown over so I would be rubbing something like Protocon or Sudacrem well into the skin all around that leg; let it sink in and cream again. Don't wash off, the next day cream again and keep repeating that just doing circular rubs, they are far more effective at getting scabs off than straight rubs. In a few days the scabs should start loosening off but don't pick at them, just keep rubbing the cream on and they should clear in no time.
If you can work out that he's not allergic to brewers yeast or micronised linseed then both of those are excellent for skin and hoof condition.

Thanks Maesfen. The condition seems to flare up from time to time and although I've always used Sodocreme as you've mentioned in your reply, the area never properly scabs and falls off. Instead the skin heals by becoming smooth again and the lumps/scurvy areas disappear. Its as though the problem is beneath the skin surface. It's the strangest thing. The first occurance happened when he was on box rest and not even turned out. I'll be keen to try the micronised linseed as he is very sensitive skin wise. Thank you for the advice! 😀

In that case then I would be tempted to use Animalintex for a couple of days in the hope that it draws whatever is stopping the healing out. If that doesn't work then I'd be sorely tempted to ask the vet to scan to see if there are any foreign bodies in there; skin doesn't not heal without a reason - normally!

Thanks for all your advice and suggestions Maesfen - Vet has now been out and suspect that this is related to his food intolerances and has suggested washing his legs with an anti dandruff shampoo! Fingers crossed!
