Hi,
Just wondering if anyone could shed any light on what I think may be some sort of skin infection in my pony or whether I may just be overreacting. His coat is patchy-he doesn't actually have bald patches but he has like patches of winter coat and patches of summer coat and is constantly rubbing and scratching on anything. When I groom him he has almost dandruff-like flaky skin coming from his mane and all of his coat and I was just wondering whether anyone had experienced anything similar with their horse. My other two horses dont have it,so its nothing contagious.
He's groomed most days and used to have a really lovely shiny chesnut coat during summer but this summer he just went all patchy and only lost parts of his winter coat.
At the moment he is rugged and I change his rugs frequently from heavy-weight to medium and light.
Just wondering whther anyone had any ideas!
Many thanks.

How old is he? Could it be cushions starting? Mange or fleas/lice It sounds like lice to me look deep into the coat are there white things darting about? if so get some louse powder. Either that or hes lacking oils

Lice. Classic symptoms and the right time of year. You can get louse powders from your vet (but they aren't very effective my vets tell me) or Frontline rubbed deep into the coat (much better). Whatever product you use, you have to re-apply after 10 days when the eggs hatch out - they aren't effected by products that kill the adults. If you don't re-apply, you'll be back to square 1 with the infestation. The little bleeders can get in bedding, grooming kit and brushes, numnahs, rugs, etc etc etc. They can spread very easily to other horses either when they stand together or touch over stable doors or if grooming equipment is shared.

Have you tried using Nizeral yet?

It is a human anti dandruff shampoo that contains Ketaconisol - you will need to buy it from the chemist and not mention that it is for your horse. UK chemists seem very funny about us using it on our horses! In NZ we have free access to it from the chemist.

Dilute 1:10, shampoo to Hot water.
Lather up well using a face cloth, make sure that you wash the area beyond the current patches. The shampoo seems to melt the scabs and they come off really easily without making the skin bleed. There is no need to rinse out. Repeat daily till all scabs have gone.

I would love some photos of before and after and the time it took. Maybe a photo diary.

I have been using this very successfully for several years now on a large number of horses, I work in the racing industry here.

Nizeral works just as well on greasy heel and rain scald - I use it on my foals, and don't rinse out.

In addition feeding a supplement containing copper and zinc is a great preventative.
This is a recipe that we have in NZ and Australia - known as the Pat Coleby Mix

Mix together
500 grams Dolomite

80 grams Copper Sulphate

80 grams of milling Sulphur

80 grams of Seaweed Meal (Urea free)

Feed 1 level Tablespoon daily

Good luck with treating your horse
