One of my horses is getting a rub from a small lump near the back of his saddle. Lump has been there since I bought him, it's a small fatty deposit according to the vet and nothing to worry about but is in an awkward place. Saddle fit has been checked but since he was clipped the skin on the lump has been rubbed. Can anyone recommend a cream/ointment to rub on to harden the skin until his summer coat comes through?

When we were fittening we always hardened skin off under the saddle area by using salt water. Methylated or surgical spirits will do the same job.

Another trick with saddle sores was to use felt type numnahs and cut a hole over the sore area, this might be an option for you if you can find a numnah of suitable fabric.

you can buy bitter alum crystals from chemist. make up into a solution as per instructions and wipe area several times a day. also is brill if you have a horse which has a thin skinned mouth to toughen up the skin. used in humans for bedsores and pressure rubs. surgical spirit works well too as long as the skin isnt broken.
