My cob youngster has recently developed patches of bad skin- big scabby lumps actually! Weepy if I pick at them :o He is so woolly so I put him back in a rain sheet rather than a m/w. Is it possible it could be due to over heating? Has anyone treated anything similar? Just putting sudocreme on them atm as they are on his quarters and it is awfully cold to bath!

Frank get's what sounds similar- can be from too hot, heat bump, sweat, fly bite, etc basically small compromise of the skin and he gets a bit of low grade bacterial infection/rainscald/mudfever like.

a couple of applications of sudocreme + sulphur powder mixed in works for him.

I did get him skin scraped when they first occurred 9 years ago to check nothing more sinister ;)

I was also going to suggest sulphur, in addition to the above I would get a lump of rock sulphur and pop it in his water bowl.

It sounds like rainscald which is just mud fever on the body. Are the scabs coming off when you pick them and are wet or slimy underneath? Hibiscrub is the treatment plus a good hot wash of the rugs you are using or else you may re-infect. Rain scald or dermatophilosis is exacerbated by warm, moist conditions i.e rugging up a sweaty or hairy beast. Neem salve or cream or other anti-bacterial product can be applied to the dried areas. basically you've got to keep them dry. Difficult in the British climate...

It is exactly that - never seen it on the body before. Saying that a lot on this thread lol. Ive put in in a rain sheet to stop him from overheating. Do you think that would help at all? :-)

yup, Frank is best kept a bit cooler- and I am careful not to rug him sweaty, always gets a wash off post work if sweated and try to keep on top of his clip so at least those areas are good (currently fighting the urge to take it all off!). He currently has one right in the middle on the front of his knee- I have no idea what has set that one off! They aren't always obvious I tend to have to run my hand over him.

July 2012 clipped and fly rugged and clearly having a bad day!...

Aww poor frank! My boy is only two so feel a clip may be a tad premature lol but I've honestly never seen hair like it. Proper yeti! Glad to know it's relatively common though. Thanks v much :-)
