It's back...

My mares started losing hair again. A little patch next to her tail, and one next to that which hasn't developed fully. The skin peels of complete with the hair, it's not painful or itchy, it just looks unsightly leaving her with a balder spot (short hairs underneath pealy skin). The patch which hasn't developed fully just feels lumpy, like the skin has cracked but isn't ready to come of. I had a similar thing last year, which is the first time I've seen it with her, we moved to the current yard two years ago so it could coincide with this. Last year the patches were all slightly different. On her legs the hair fell out with little white ends, not in clumps but individually, on her back and on her side the hair fell out in clumps, and the same as she has now on her back side. Its never been all over, just odd little patches varying in size from a fist to a whole hand. I'm probably just being melodramatic in worrying about it. It's not causing pain or anything it just looks horrible. I'm putting antiseptic cream and cournecresine on, I hibiscrubed last year to no effect. What could it be? The midges are out now but then surely she would itch and this allways ends after she's finished moulting. What could it be? Anyone seen anything similar?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm being a right drama queen, I know

Crikey it could be all sorts of things - infestation of mites or lice, some sort of bacterial thing ( like a rainscald), an allergy to feed, an allergy to almost anything, an auto immune problem.

Has the vet taken a look?

Thankyou for your snappy replies you two

It isn't itchy and it isn't painful, the current patches are on the left side of her tail, about five centermeters away... on her but cheek

She wears a rug, so not sure it can be rainscald... plus it's very localised at the moment. Checked for lice as she had gotten rather scurffy recently, the hair on her whole body has got courser and lot's of cat hairs. Putting this down to spring? But no sign of lice or things moving. Once she finished moulting last year this all went away? I'm so confused... It could be bacterial I guess, Spaniel? What could I do if it is? The vet was informed last year but just thought it was me being silly. One of those vets that thinks if the leg isn't falling of everythings fine...

Could be midges I found lots of bites round her udders the other day, but no itchiness. sooo confused

Is she in a stable rug with a neck on? It might be a contact thing from her bedding as the cheeks at both ends would be exposed when she lies down. Have you tried changing bedding?

She's out 24/7, could it come from the soil like mud fever bacteria? She's in a turnout with a neck, and has a large tail flap but I don't think it covers her butt sides. I'll have to get a photo this evening, it doesn't look infected, sore or itchy it just looks like you've shaved a couple of inches of her coat of.

Year ago a pony I had showed similar symptoms and he had an alergy to changing his coat apparently. I did the following and it did help:

wash all of your rugs in an antibacterial powder (easier said than done at this time of year! lol) and bath her in an antibacterial shampoo so you can eliminate that.

Treat the patch with fairly concentrated Hibiscrub twice a day.

Change you bedding and disinfect her stable - sounds drastic but theer could be something lurking in there you can't detect!

Lastly, get her a tub of WINERGY Ventil-ate. Its a respiratory supplement but my vet told me to use it as an immune system boost becasue its got such a good antioxident package in it. One tub is a four week dose (two sccops in one feed per day) and that did the trick! It's £29 a tub but much cheaper than a vets bill!!

Good luck x

I was just thinking, about what you suggested Spaniel about food allergy, last year I was concerned that adding Baileys Cooked Cereal Meal had had something to do with it? I cut that out, but recently I have just upped her amount of A+P Calm and condition. Could it be something in the feeds?

Thankyou Scarlet1980, I could hibiscub twice a day, but it's too cold too wash and I've not got rugs to spare

I'll have a look into the supplement, and will hibiscrub tonight, thanks for your help

That's ok. Also, if you're thinking about a feed to try that is fairly allergy safe WINERGY also do one called Equilibrium Growth which is a fibre and oil based, complete feed. It's fairly conditioning but has NO cereal in it so would eliminate a barley allergy. Also its low glyceamic so has the tiniest amount of sugar so would rule that out as well!

Calm and Condition is meant to be barley and mollasses free but still has a lot of starch in it so it could be that.

I know I sound like a bit of a WINERGY fanatic but honestly it's amazing stuff. Their care line number is 01908 226626 if you want to give them a call.

Could be a bacterial infection such as rainscald, even with a rug on there's a chance with the changeable weather she's sweated and bacteria have entered the skin. I've had a similar prob with my mare and had the vet to look at her on Monday, she'd suggested the rainscald thing over the phone but now we think ringworm and are treating as such. Just dabbing the areas with an anti-fungal shampoo, groom rest of her leaving the soap on those areas during that time then rinse & dry and am applying wound powder to make sure the skin is properly dry. My mare has been v v itchy with it but vet says sometimes they can get it without the itch.

Hi, thanks for your help, just updated to add, I washed her last night with Malaseb (sp? anti fungal I think) and hibiscrub. Malaseb is something our last vet gave us years ago for a pony who's hair was falling out in patches, but in a different way, hair falling out, like a serious moult, and leaving big bare patches to the skin. Anyway there seems to be another patch appearing on the other side of her tail, will keep hibiscrubing and washing and see how it goes. Hopefully we'll not get any more patches

, thanks for the advice MyMills, will make sure it's kept dry aswell, I have some plaster things for horses... will se if we can rig something up so the snow doesn't cause problems, as the patches aren't quite covered by the rug.
Thanks for all your help guys
