My friends horse is a beautiful cob with feathers. She has scurffy, scabby skin in her feathers and on her skin. She is also a bit itchy. She has removed the feathers in the past but the vet said not to bother and left some lotion to wash her legs in [not sure what it was] and leave them to dry and to repeat every 10 days. This has had no effect and it seems worse now. It's mainly on her front legs. She will get the vet out again but does anyone have any advive on what to do?

Thanking you in advance.

We had the vet to our trad who had the same problem - he is the one in my avatar and you can see how much feather he had! We clipped the legs out, washed with hibiscrub, and he was jabbed with Dectomax, I think ten days apart, this was last Spring. We kept the legs clipped out, and sprayed with Canovel (similar to Frontline), and that seemed to keep it under control. His legs were last clipped in October, and we've just done them again, they are sore and itchy again, I think he's had the problem for years and years, and therefore it's really hard to get on top of it.

it sound like feather mites wash them in an insecticedtal shampoo then buy a product from global herbs called foot stamp that ment to work wonders!

my friends horse had this issue

they separated the feathers down the centre of back of the leg with plaiting bands so they could clearly get to the skin underneath. they then washed with hibiscrub etc and solved the problem

Frontline then pig oil and sulphur - if you want the long long PM I do on keeping hairy horses in good condition with show quality hair, PM me and I will send it to you.

Keep the clippers away - only use if you have lots of sores that need treating, and if you have open sores do not use frontline but P&S is ok.

Would you mind PMing me?

I've got a coloured cob and am just growing his feathers back, but he keeps itching every now and again and don't know what to do to stop him?!
