Recently my horse has had these lumps appear on his rump and a few others on his neck and rib area, tiny little raised lumps, but one larger area which has lost hair and scabbed over. Now at first I thought it might be ringworm, but my father is quite certain that it not. Now I haven't much experience with skin conditions so wondered if any one had any ideas, but guess you would need pictures?
Thanks

I too have a similar problem with Micah my new horse. had the vet out on Monday as like you I suspected ring worm (some were large and round) however vet seems to think it is more likely a bacterial infection caused by warmer rugs. She has taken scrapings just in case. But says if its a bacterial infection it is because it is there in the skin all the time and an extra warm environment has enabled it to grow
won't have results for a day or two yet

Aloe vera gel has soften the scabs so they are peeling off now

It's rain scald which is the same as mud fever but on areas other than the legs and feet. You treat it the same. Gently pick the scabs off and rub Hibiscrub right deep into the skin and hair. Rinse and dry. If it's hard to clear up you can make a small amount of dilute Hibiscrub (mix with a bit of warm water) and rub in and leave it in. It comes from either an unrugged horse getting constantly wet on his back, neck etc or a rugged horse being too sweaty under his rug or rugged up before he's dried after exercise. And don't be confused by it being in an odd place eg just down one side of the neck. Where the horse likes to stand in his field when the weather's bad can cause anomalies like that x

Humm, sounds interesting as he has been in a heavy winter rug and in all honesty the weather has been so mild of late. He is fully clipped so I guess I just didn't want him getting cold since he is a wimpy TB. It is strnage that it has mostly occured on the back of his rump and area which you would assume wouldn't get too hot.
Have been searching the net to find similar problems and came accross "collagen granulomas" which also sound similar to what he has got, but then so does rain scald. I will try your remody Box of frogs and see if this helps. Thank you!

There is another way that clipped horses can get a bacterial infection. (Explained to a friend of mine by her Vet.) You work your horse and he gets warm, the pores of the skinare open. You don't wash him because its cold weather and after all he is not wet with sweat, so you put a rug on him. The pores are open and the rug is against the skin so bacteria from rug get into the pores. The rug does not have to be filthy. To prevent this happening put on a cotton cooler, then the rug. Cooler can be washed weekly. This worked for my friend.
Don't bother myself as mine aren't fully clipped.

Thanks all! Have picked off the scabs and washed with hibiscrub thsi morning, will she what happens. Shall I repeat this every day untill it clears up?
Thats an interesting thought about exercising and rugging.
Now one question, he is a hunter so should I not take him out untill its cleared? is it contaegious (sorry dreadful spelling)?
Thanks again
