Skin Problem??

Hope this is in the right section

I bought Maggie in the other day and noticed some small bald patches on her knees, and a few very small patches on the right side of her face. They came on very quickly I haven't a clue what they are! The hair pulls off in clumps and leaves the pink skin underneath. The small patches have now grown and they're fairly large. Don't seem to be causing her any pain. I've only had her 1 month.

Does anybody have a clue what it is?

My first option would be rain scald

Did you have her vetted and bloods taken when you bought her?

Give her a good bath with Nizoral shampoo from the chemist. Dilute in had hot water and lather up well working well into the skin.

Sometimes when a horse moves to a different environment they can get a dermaphylis (apologies if the spelling isn't correct - I only know the French one). This isn't serious and is no more than a change in their skin's floral balance. We have found that keeping it clean, brushing off the loose hairs and exposing the affected area to air and sunlight (difficult in the UK sometimes, I know) helps it clear up very quickly.

The other possilbilty is that your horse is now in contact with creeping buttercup which can cause a photosensitivity in skin with pink pigment, ie white socks, pink noses etc. The best way of dealing with this in the short term is to move her to a different paddock which is less infested.
