My pony has developed a skin problem where the skin becomes hard and ruckles up under the fur, eventually it forms a scab and an oval section then drops off about 2x5cm in size. You're left with a bald patch of skin and then the fur grows back normally. Have only had the pony since Aug. It happened almost immediatey after we got her and the vet thought it a bacterial infection ?from being bitten by one of the many horses she had been living with just before she left (she was picked on +++). It cleared up with a couple of hibiscrub bathings and the fur grew back straight away and no problems since til last week. It has suddenly happened again almost in the same place on her neck although this time a little closer to her withers. Doesn't appear sore/itchy particularly. I also think a similar patch is developing on the other side of her neck as I can feel the skin starting to harden and wrinkle there too. She no longer lives with other horses, just sheep and pigs adjoining. I've never seen anything like it before and not sure where to go from here other than getting the vet back in again. Her mane appears very dandruffy down at the roots. Generally her fur seems very dusty/dirty She had been a bit unloved prior to us getting her. Haven't really had good enough weather to give her a really good bath which I think she desperately needs. Any ideas/suggestions appreciated.
