My mare has sweet itch, but she also has scabs on her lower hinds and bald patches on her face. The scabs are around the fetlock and heel area and they bleed quite often, I can pick them off and they come out with a bit of hair. All on her face and ears she has dry bald patches that I orginially thought was her sweet itch but now I think not. I have considered mud fever and ringworm, but has anyone else experienced something like this? Im not sure if its worth getting the vet out or not.

Could be all kinds of things, from allergies to liver problems. I would say it is worth asking you vet to have a look.

I would get the vet to take a look. It could be one of many possibilities and it's best to diagnose for appropriate treatment. Skin problems can be made worse if you do the wrong thing with them.

My advice is to get the vet and meantime to stop picking the scabs off. You may be making matters worse by doing that.

No, she is completely chestnut.
