For the first time I am dealing with proper sweet itch adn need something to keep the little blighters away from her boobies and the inside of her legs etc (the bits the rug doesn't cover) I was going to make up something with the skin so soft but can't find the skin so soft and fresh that people recommend. Could any one tell me if they have changed the name and what it is called now?? Thanks

It is made by Avon! Find your nearest Avon rep and order at least half a dozen bottles to see you through the summer. It is cheap because it does not have a 'horse' use age prefix, liberally spray in to mane and tail roots, work in with your fingers and spray where ever your pony is sensitive. Ideally pony should be in during the day and out at night. Keep covered up and do not feed any feeds with high sugar content. :)

Please beware of broken skin, yours and horses when using SSS. I got some in a paper cut and trust me it STUNG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

For that area on my girl I melt a pot of Poundland vaseline, add a good slug of Neem Oil and mix it up. Pour back into the pot(s) and stir every 10 minutes while it sets.

oooh that's good to know I have just got a load of neem oil

My poor baby has been savaged on his ears and legs so far what are you putting on those areas?? I have sudocream the ears but legs ive done same on open wounds on legs but what to put on to stop maybe vinegar??? what do you think??

only thing ive found with skin so soft is that if the temp drops a little it sets like lard:confused: anyone else had this problem im using the one with green label

I've found that too tinpot it's a pain in the bum!
:D glad im not the only one posted about it before but no one commented thought it was just me. down side is ive just bought another couple of bottles as it was on offer but like you say its a real pain in the bum when you have to warm it up before you use it

Quite!! If the skin is even slightly red, stick with sudocrem or germolene. I use this on the broken bits (and to highlight where not to put other goo) and then use Neem oil on so far unbitten skin. SSS does react with some horses, too, so not sure I'd ever use it on a SI horse, as they're more sensitive in any case.

Plenty of sweet itch threads on here, OP. Do a search!

thats right it can happen at just below room temp or just out of sunshine such a shame as it is meant to be really good just cant be arsed to fire up the kettle to thaw it out everytime :D

I'll get this in as some well-meaning soul is bound to recommend "pig oil and sulphur". PLEEESE patch-test yours first if using it coz when I (stupidly) used it on mine, he came up very pink and sore. He's got white hair & pink legs, so not the best combination for anything remotely irritating to the skin. But be very careful what you use.

Sudocrem is fine, OK to cover up sensitive areas, sores etc and as a sunblock and keeps insects away from sore places, BUT the snag with it is that its a b@ggar to get rid of!! I put some on the top of my loan mare's tail as she'd rubbed it a bit there, the monkey, and I ended up washing her tail three times before it shifted!!!

Feed linseed oil, Clivers (sticky stuff, grows in hedges at the mo but you can also buy as a supplement); and Brewers Yeast. Avoid sugary things & molasses, plus keep away from anything with garlic, which isn't good for sweet itches as it stimulates the immune system which isn't what you want as SI is an immunosupressant condition.

Do a search on "sweet itch" on here; you'll come up with a wealth of info.

Best rug IMO is the Rambo Sweet Itch hoody; not cheap, but fab. Closely followed by the Premier Equine hoody (cheaper but good quality).

PS forgot to say that yes I've experienced the Skin So Soft stuff going solid on me too! Thought it was just my freezing cold tack-room. Its a blimmin nuisance; also the nozzle gets bunged up really quickly which is annoying.

i have the same with skin so soft which is such a shame ive left it out side thinking the tack room must get to cold at night but still freezes  my lad doesn't have sweet itch but just comes up in lumps n bumps from the little blighters if that makes any sense:confused: ( not scratching) such a shame but its a pain freezing all the time as when its not frozen and blocking the nozzle it seems to keep them away

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have order a boet type rug from HKM and some nettex advance fly cream and itch stop salve so hopefully itching will be a thing of the past for the poor girl soon. Untill all that arrives though I am off to get some vaseline as I don't fancy getting that much sudocrem off and as shes a chestnut it will be like a beacon between her legs all that white lol. Blasted things they are terrible this year.
