what supplements do people recommend for horses skin?
My horse has a scabby patch which comes and goes but nothing seems to ever keep it away so was contemplating putting him on a supplement for his skin to try and see if that’ll help. Any recommendations would be appreciated or any ideas of anything I could try to stop them coming back. They also don’t bother him in the slightest

I’ve been looking at omega equine ultra oil so any opinions about this would also be appreciated 😊

My horse was pretty itchy, even in winter before flies came, and had a few suspected flat sarcoids. I started feeling oily herbs (rosemary, thyme and oregano) and her itchiness has improved greatly, no itched bald spots anymore. Her sarcoids are disappearing. Even in winter her coat is shiny and she still has some dapples. In summer she was covered in them which she didn’t have before.

There’s a good thread here about oily herbs. I was feeding them for gut health so I was surprised to see such a difference in my horse but they’ve made such a difference to her.

I also feed her linseed but the herbs is what really helped.

What are you currently feeding? There maybe something in that which you can take out to solve it.
He’s on fibre beet, dengue ulcer lite chaff and topspev lite balancer however has been on completely different feed in the past and scabby area was still there

How do I access the thread about oily herbs?

The supplement I’ve looked at includes rosemary oil, nkt sure whether to go with that or get some of the 3 different herbs. Did you notice the herbs making a difference behaviour and energy wise?

She was pretty energetic anyway so I can’t say I did but I assume her overall health is better which must make her feel better.

When you say about the herbs, I’m assuming you can just get the ordinary herbs or do you have to get something equine specific, I can’t see there being a difference but wanted to check as think I may buy the 3 herbs separately, mix them up and give them a go

Yeah just normal herbs and mix them together when I get them home. I buy 1kg bags from whole feeds

Sorry to bother you again! How much do you tend to feed of the herbs please. I’ve bought some of the 3 and have mixed it all together. I have a 25ml scoop and just wondering how much is ideal?

I give mine 2 x 60ml scoops a day with their feed. It’s a bit more than others do so you can trial it as you want to. Mine don’t have hedges to forage in and my grazing isn’t very varied.
My horses are 14.2 and a 16.1 and they get the same amount.

And it’s no bother at all 😊

Ah that’s great thank you, my boys around 16hh and lives on a track livery to the main part of his diet is hay, the grass field has now been eaten down and there’s no leaves on the trees etc this time of year so his forage isn’t too varied. I feed 2 x 25ml to start with and possibly up it to 3 and see how that goes then, just don’t want to feed him too much or too little of it! Really appreciate all the help with it 😊
