Skinned Hind Leg

Got home yesterday and the new horse has obviously been farting about. On the inside of his off hind by his hock he has skinned a few bits off his leg. He was fine last night - it had bled a bit but washed it off and put green oils on. Turned him back out because he's a nightmare without his companion.

Went out to see them this morning and it has puffed up a bit and he is obviously a bit sore on it. Cold hosed it for 15 mins and liberally covered his leg with aloe vera gel.

Should it have puffed up and made him sore or would it be the start of an infection? As far as I can see none of the scrapes are very deep at all. He is a TB. I've left him out again today because I thought he'd be better walking around on it.

I was very impressed that he was so good to deal with whilst treating it - bodes well for the future! Sod's law I've only had him for 2 days!!

Any advice greatly appreciated.

My horse did this on both back legs about 3 weeks ago after deciding to jump into the next field!
I gave him bute for a couple of days - it was slightly swollen the first day but then was fine. I think that you should just keep your eye on it so that it doesn't look to be infected and maybe put some fly repellant around it to keep them away.
The ones on my horses leg kept scabbing up - I tried to remove the scabs (while he was waving his leg in the air!) and used dermagel to keep it moist.
It has taken 2-3 weeks but the hair has now started to grow back - he has been sound throughout - good luck.
By the way - I kept my horse out as I thought he was better walking around to keep down any swelling.

Plaster it in sudocreme. It is cooling, healing, and will keep it moist. Don't keep getting the area wet though as this will prevent healing from taking place.

Should I be worried that he is a bit lame on the leg? Its obviously pretty sore which I'm sure would make anyone limp a bit but was rather worried that he was lame and it had made his leg puff up a bit.

I did give him a bute this morning to ease the pain a bit and help with the swelling.

So other than keeping an eye on it to make sure it doesn't become infected and putting sudocrem on it there's not a lot to do? Obviously if it looks as though its getting manky Mr Vet will be straight out!!

If it is just a scrape and you've washed it thoroughly then I wouldn't be too worried about an infection but have you had a good look else where on the leg incase there is something nastier he's done at the same time lurking hidden? If it's still more swelling than you'd normally expect could he be allergic the the cream? My mare swells up like mad with Dermobian but is ok with other things.
