Unfortunately my lurcher spotted a deer before I did this evening and went off in hot pursuit including over tarmac and gravel. He has taken the top layer off both front pads - around a 50p size on one pad and twice that on the other one. Understandably he is pretty sore and has not bothered with his dinner tonight. He has cut pads before and really struggled until they healed. If I take him to the vets will they do anything? They look nice and clean with no obvious lacerations or dirt stuck in. I am assuming that I need to keep him from walking around as much as possible and keep his feet clean and dry - anything else? Thanks in advance.

Diesel my male Dobe did this about a month ago, I soaked his feet in warm salty water dried them very carefully and then smothered them in sudocream at night covered with an old sock. This healed in a week but I was lucky as he kept his sock on at night. His exercise was limited in this time and was kept on a lead so he didnt damage it further.

Mine does this on a regular basis  I find that cleaning them thoroughly and then bandaging the feet with lots of padding (cotton wool, animalintex) has helped him.

Mine slices his quite regularly between running through glass left down at the beach, sigh, or skidding around after his ball, and I get a spray disinfectant and spray plaster from the chemist, cuts out any wrestling or having to tape him up.
Also a lot of road work to keep the pads tough, although I know genetics/breed type/paw conformation/general skidding around can all have an impact.
