this is Ali. He arrived in this condition and after a year of TLC, left in the same condition. Now, had you seen him out in the field, what would you have done? Would you have knocked on my door to talk about him, or, would you have set up a witch hunt to close me down? I have other pics of liveries who were underweight but were well fed and followed by vet and dentist to no avail. Skinnyness is not always due to underfeeding and /or neglect. Will dig out some other pics.

I would have come and spoken to you about it.

However, the fact that you had more than one skinny lovery would worry me. But if, as you say, you had vets/dentists etc keeping an eye on them, then I can't see a problem.

No.

My rule of thumb is, are the feet looking ok, is everything else in the field looking well? If so, it's just that horse that's a bit lean and it's probably all in hand :)

Might mention it to you if I saw you but wouldn't knock on your door unless I was really worried. I don't "do" reporting unless it's life or death..

I would say I was looking at a horse with some form of metabolic disorder going on if he's had all other options dealt with re teeth etc. His coat is shiny and his look is bright but he sure looks like something is going on. When welfare is questioned you have to look at the horse and the whole picture not just what is in front of you.

I am not sure if I would report if the establishment was well run and had a good reputation as I would think that they would be aware of this horses problems. I would however be concerned if I saw this horse in a field and had no idea who owned him. I dont know what IS wrong with this horse but clearly something is awry, navicular? But as you hae posted a picture you must be aware and in control of his welfare.

I dont really know what you are trying to prove. You have clearly JUST rescued this pony, if in 3 months or more and the pony still looked emaciated, then yes I would report you.

I think the general public report skinny horses because their only thought is that it is not being fed. They prob don't think any medical issues could be involved. I wouldn't expect people to talk to owners really. (they prob don't think there are any excuses) and how do they know how they will react? therefore reporting to the RSPCA is common sense. If the owner has nothing to hide then it shouldn't be a problem. Having several skinny liveries would concern me.

Ooh, how is Tom now? Has he fully recovered?

On your question of skinny horses, it would depend on the ratio of poor looking to well looking horses as to whether I would speak to you.

I would rather speak to the person in charge before doing anything else and then judge it from there. As the owner of three veterans I know its not always that easy to keep weight on them, especially ones like my pb arab who drops weight if I make the slightest changes to her management and that includes putting the herd on the winter paddocks.

Dunno is the honest answer. Perhaps maybe. The ones you've posted so far don't look in great shape. I've spent all my life round horses and seen many many livery yards and oldies and haven't seen 3 on one yard looking like this. Why are you asking? Take it there's a reason?

I agree, yes at the very least I'd talk to you and I would probably report you TBH, certainly the first three don't look great. Don't really understand what you want from posting these pics though!

I dont know your reasons behind your question but none of those horses are in good condition. Not sure what I would do, as you are not near me and I dont know you, but I would certainly be concerned if a large proportion of horses including long stay ones looked poor. But if there are known medical reasons for their conditions then there is no problem, so why ask? confused.com. ?????

If I was to see ALL of those horses in one place at the same time, I probably would report that I was concerned. If only one, as long as there was water/food/fencing of quality and care for the feet, I would accept there must be an underlying reason. There may be a story behind it, but it's the job of the officials to find it out. I'm afraid I have no idea if you'd take my concern nicely or break my nose for nosing, so wouldn't come speak to you directly.

Hit the nail on the head right now, whats the story behind the first horse? is he yours?

A bit off topic now, but regarding the second picture of Treasure Man (assuming he is a livery horse). Assuming you had permission to post his picture online? if I was this horses owner I would not be best pleased seeing him plastered on a public internet forum.

the point of my post is to put across that what is seen on HHo or FB and co, doesn't nec mean that it is up to date and todays reality!
The first horse Ali has a condition of the small intestine and will never put on weight no matter what you feed him. He left to a yard nearer his owners home and is still the same.
The pony is Paolino who was rescued from an Italian market and became .....

after a couple of years-he is now even better and ridden by an 8 year old girl.
Timmy, at the time of the pic, was suffering fronm nettle rash. He usually looks like this....

and this is my beloved Tom. In the first pic he had just come beck from 10 days in a clinic. he had a bad bought of pneumonia and lost one lung. a year later he looked like this....

So you see, what you see may not be what you believe it to be, so, before starting a witchhunt or joining a 'witch hunt', find out the facts.
Good luck to Toni and BER!

I love the look of your little rescue pony. He is a proper cutie! Well done to you.

And I think that this is a very good point. Faracat has a similar thread earlier in the week. I don't really know enough about the BER thing to pick sides but the basic point that photos are not always the whole story is something we would all do well to remember at times :)

The trouble is, people wouldn't always want to approach the owner. You can never be sure of anyones reaction (especially on a farm etc in middle of nowhere!) So if I was honestly concerend about any animal I would report. If it is easily explained to RSPCA I can't see what the problem is. Ok not nice to be reported and hassle for you etc, but better that than ignoring a potential abuse case.

Also how do we know the owner will tell us the truth! The RSPCA are trained in how to approach people, what to ask etc. I personally would let them deal with it. It is their job after all.

I can appreicate it must be annoying though.

ETA I would however never join a witch hunt on FB or whatever. I would just report and leave it there. never get involved in slagging people off. Unless it is Linda Parelli ;)

Ditto, too many cases go un-reported for too long look at Carrot and his friend (sorry forgot its name!)

Tom is fine. He has slowed down a great deal but then, so have I. Old age should come gracefully and lived to the full!!!! Thanks for remembering himxxxx

ahh the lovely tom , i foillowed his story with my heart in my mouth .
so pleased to see him looking so well x
in answer to your original question id speak to you and ask if i could help in anyway.

I remember Tom and his lungs! He looks magnificent now, amazing recovery especially for a 'senior' gentleman. :)

You illustrate well the fact that a photo is just a snapshot in time, it is almost (IMO) impossible to deduce much from a single picture.
