Today I bought a tub of Skratch Plus whilst I was in the feed place - figured I might as well stock up for summer, it's not cheap! I tried superskratch last year, and I know it stinks but tonight my mum opened the tub and sniffed when I told her it doesn't smell very nice.

She's wretching in the sink as I write

Am I right in thinking this stuff smells worse than the superskratch?? I can't believe my horse will EVER eat this stuff!!

It's horrendous, I did the whole gagging thing. I have the fussiest pony ever with most things, but we've SLOWLY managed to build him up to a scoop a day (he has it all year round, mainly for fear he won't start eating it again come summer haha). Even the bucket stinks of the stuff no matter how much I clean it!

Works extremely well for him!

I wonder if they sweat the smell, not that I noticed it on him last year. Maybe that's what puts the bugs off biting them! I can still smell it now and the lid was only off for a minute or so :S

Oh, nice! He was bathed in hibiscrub every few days last summer because the SI was so bad.

Can't be worse than the sweaty feet smell that comes off our shetland when it's mild. Had to put her rainsheet outside so I didn't pass out every time I walked in the tack room.

I think they do! My late gelding was always on Skratch plus / superskratch in summer and always smelt of it - it does help to deter the midges and flies, they don't like the scent. It smells awful but he (luckily) ate anything & it definitely made a big difference so I kept feeding it & just held my breath as I put it in! It does help if you dampen the fee, makes it a lot less dusty too x

"it works by soothing affected skin and repelling flies and midges by producing a characteristic odour which passes through the skin. If your horse is a fussy feeder use skratch syrup. For the most difficult situations use Superskratch".

Apparently the main ingredients are curcuma longa (turmeric) and cedrus deodara (cedar, I assume cedar oil).

If you google it, apparently cedar oil is super gross to insects ;)
