I currently have a beautiful velvet hat which is very lovely. However I am hankering after a skull cap (one reason was the velvet hat was so flipping expensive I don't want to trash it now i'm riding more often!) - problem is the reason I ended up with a velvet one is because apparently I have an oval head instead of a round head and the tack shop couldn't get a skull cap to fit me!!

Has anyone else had this problem and found a type that does fit - I'm not prepared to go through life with a fancy fixed-peak hat because my head is odd!!

Can't help you, except to sympathise - my head's round round round like a little bobble and I have exactly the opposite problem!

I have the same problem!! Can't remember exactly which one I have but it is a Charles Owen and cost about £80, hope this helps, if you want the exact model pm and I will look tomorrow.

I dont have a round head, cant fit a champion AT ALL

charles owens are ok, better as riding hat, others press on forehead to much and bag behind.

Try a gatehouse one on. I have a HS1 and is only hat to have ever fitted me properly.

CHARLES OWEN J3 SKULL IS GOOD. I HAVE SAME PROBLEM AS YOU, AND STUPIDLY BOUGHT A CHAMPION VENTAIR - WAS 'PROFESSIONALLY FITTED'. FELT A BIT TIGHT AT THE FRONT BUT SOON EASED OFF, THEN BECAME LOOSE VERY QUICKLY. WENT TO GET A NEW SKULL AND WAS TOLD HEAD WAS TOTALLY THE WRONG SHAPE FOR THE VENTAIR! THE GATEHOUSE HSI DOESN'T FIT ME EITHER - WAY TOO ROUND SHAPED, JUST LIKE THE CHAMPION. I FIND THE CHARLES OWEN VERY COMFY.

I have an oval head and can find Just Togs, Champion and Charles Owen hats that fit me. Not necessarily every type of hat from each, they seem to differ. The Champion vented hat was fine but it sounds like the skull wouldn't have worked.

I am exactly the same as you. Last time my saddler "fixed" it by fitting me a skull cap about 3 sizes too small. The headaches until it moulded to my bizarre head shape were dreadful. And everyone would laugh at the bright red patch on my forehead. Not nice!! If you find a solution I'd be pleased to hear it, provided it's better than mine of course!!

Ohhhh, I totally have the same problem!! plus I have an abnormally large head (the largest size commonly made!) so fitting is an extra problem! My skull is a Charles Owen AdVentura. It is absolutley perfect and I love that it has leather straps rather than the webbing ones - looks a little bit posher!

Good luck on the hat hunt!

I have a narrow oval head and skull caps do not fit me at all, they are more of a round shape for a rounder shaped head I've been told- the only make that really fits me and is comfortable is normally a velvet type Charles Owen hat- maybe a Charles Owen type hat will fit- I know one of their ranges of Skull Caps does come in a narrow fit, as I did used to have one!. Having said that I remember a cpl of years ago, I was at a tack shop trying on hats and I remember that a skull cap did fit me and was v comfortable and that was a Gatehouse HS1 or whatever they're called!

You are sooooo not alone....I have tried on loads of different hats and the only one I've found that fits is the childrens Charles Owen velvet....going on a mission after xmas to find another one as the velvet is looking ropey after so much wear....will be interested to find out if you find anything.

I have one of these....I refer to it as 'alien head'

The only skull i've found to fit is the Charles Owen Young Rider. I'm not a young rider but they do do adult sizes, if CO stop making it I'll be stuffed!

Hurrah! I'm loving the fact that I'm not alone in oval-headed-ness! I currently have a Charles Owen showjumper velvet one so might go and try some Charles Owen skull caps, I know it's just a case of going to try loads on but it's nice to know I'm not the only on with this issue!!

I have a Dublin Onyx for my mutant head. Its a size four and oval shaped! I'd put up with years of red marks and headaches before I bought my onyx, now I would never change it. Certainly worth a try, Charles Owen are still far too round for me.

def Charles Owen. used to work in a tack shop and found that round heads are better in these. Try the kids range, they go upto a big size and are even rounder and cheaper

I have exactly the same problem!!!
I have always hat velvet hats....and after mine got torn and faded to grey I fell in love with the Charles Owen J3 low profile skull!

I went to a Derby House stall at Badminton and they fitted the hat to my head using foam padding. It took a while to get used to it as it did feel a little tight to begin with...but now it has molded to my oval head!

Would definitely rate the J3....but make sure you do get the foam padding at the sides....otherwise the skull caps will not fit properly.
