Sky News thinks horse cruelty funny!!

Ah, but you can design your own crush with solid walls!
A very large horse charity I worked for had one, that was used on a regular basis. Try dealing with wild ponies any other way and you're in trouble

we have a good system now..solid barn wall and a half panel gate..it works well..just needs 3 people sometimes with all the kicking and struggling..

feisty little buggers....but it gets all the "nasties" over and done with in one 2 minute burst per pony...they get over it very quickly!!

You are very, very cruel.
You are supposed to put on a cowboy hat and chase them round and round until they are too tired to object. Then you put on a halter and poke it with a carrot stick, then it will be quite happy for you to jump upon its back (no helmet required 'coz it trusts you) and then gallop it into a fast moving trailer. See, true natural horsemanship is simply a case of combining all that you see on TV and throwing it together so that you become the best horse whisperer since John Rarey!

Spain's treatment of animals IS pretty disgusting - but my immediate objection in this instance was the way Sky trivialised it with their 'jokey' captions - which basically would appear to MANY people to mean it was an ok way to treat horses!

Sorting out Spain is a major job for the international horse charities and politicians. Sorting out Sky's attitude to blatant animal cruelty WE can do!!

What, the WHOLE of Spain's treatment of animals is pretty disgusting is it? Have you ever lived in Spain? What do you PERSONALLY know of Spain and it's treatment of animals? Do you read The Daily Mail?

I did the whole debate about this festival last year and I am not going to re-do it because it makes me incredibly cross that people like you label a whole country as cruel. There is cruelty in EVERY country, but do you know what you are commenting on? Do you know the whats and whys regarding this festival? Remember, photos can be made to look very dramatic...

If you want to be a do gooder then there are plenty of causes closer to home that actually DO require support and vocal people.

If ALL Spaniards are so terribly cruel to their animals then answer me how come Iberian horses are so well thought of throughout the world...

Goody - that's how I do it, too!

Joking apart, the best thing is to get necessary things over and done with ASAP. As long as no protracted and unnecessarily harsh restraining is done, the ponies will shake themselves down and get over it. All the better if it is being done for their own good.

If it is for sport.

This used to be a really friendly forum what is happening to it, surely everyones entitled to their own opinion.
People are different, some care more than others, some just see things differently from others, some know more than others, but those who know the facts shouldnt attack those that dont by labbeling them as bunnny lovers or tree huggers.
Nine times out of ten when things are explained clearly people they can somtimes see things in a different light and if they dont, hay so what.
Most debates that i now read on this forum turn into slanging matches or posters start being sarcastic and taking the P***

Its all very sad.

Spose your all going to have a go at me now

Then maybe people shouldn't state that the whole of a country's inhabitants treat animals terribly

I am very passionate about the country I consider home and I get fed up with people labeling it as a country full of animal abusers.

Yes i know how you must feel but as you said there is allot of cruelty going on in all countries in one way or another, some people are just not aware of that and dont understand, they need to know other peoples points of veiw without being slated.
Id just like to say that it was me that posted about this last year, i put some videos up from youtube that i found, i found it very distressing, Weezy, you actually explained to me waht was going on and others had their say as well and it did make me change my thoughts on it slightly and see things from a slightly different perspective. But it still doesnt mean to say i like it, thats my choice.
I always thought this forum was for helping others giving constructive advice and to have a bit of a friendly chin wag.
I just see more and more of this and its such a shame, ive had lots of really good advice from people on here, including yourself, Weezy.
Im not having ago at anyone in particular, to be honest i dont even take note of the names half the time i just read the post.
Its just my opinion thats all, dont want to get anyones back up.

Theres far too much crap in the world, and lifes is too short.
So be nice

Sorry am i missing something.. why are WILD horses being sheared and tagged? as for the journalist's skills on this story-not so great! We arent bunny huggers, but this kind of thing should be stopped in my opinion, its cruel, unneceserry. as for the manner it is conducted in, the job "has" to be done but the way it is done, with the crowds gathered round, it is very unneceserry for the horses!

Stephen.

Interesting - look at all the pics, the only injury I see is to a human. I suspect the wild Horses do far more injury to each other in their own fights.

I'm not going to comment on it because I don't know the full story. If it's just rounding up and tagging for stock monitoring purposes then I suspect there are few alternatives. They do the same with cows in the states and make a spectacle of it in rodeos. This way of doing it probably avoids costs that can't be paid. They all look healthy and are freed at the end. How do we know it isn't necessary to tag the Horses? You need to see all sides before branding it cruel. Most of the UK eats chicken, most of those chickens will have a far worse life than those Horses.

I don't think we can criticise ANY other countries or methods until we get our own house in order.......

Well I have to say I'm astounded that anyone tries to justify that sort of handling of wild horses.

I have handled totally wild horses - and I sure didn't need to call in a bunch of muscle-bound macho mates to help!! Or make it 'entertainment'. This IS part of 'entertainment' rather than the best way of doing a necessary job.

Yes, things aren't perfect on the animal welfare front in this country - but Spain's record on animal abuse for entertainment is FACT! Just in case you doubt me, have a look at this (with the sound up!) and see just what passes for public entertainment!

There is cruelty everywhere - but usually it's sick individuals acting out of the public eye! In Spain, it has public approval!

Well sorry but it is FACT that poeple do horrendous thing to horses over here for entertainment, so don't get upset when people don't jump on your bandwagon to crucify other nations.
I applaud anyone who gets these things into the public eye and does something about it, you included for posting this and making us aware, but don't expect everyone to have the same opinions or passions that you have.
The world is not that perfect.

I don't really think that can be said ref horses (unless you're anti the Grand National.) All horse SPORTS are strictly controlled (albeit sometimes not strictly enough). And while individuals DO abuse horses for 'fun' - THAT is illegal here! Same for other 'entertainments' involving animal abuse.

No - the world's not perfect - people in many parts of the world are treated just as badly - but do we just say 'ah well - it's a shame!'

Are we sure that they were tormenting it with a digger, rather than trying to herd it?...

I have never seen a bull to scared to fight a matador!!!

We have people representing the Olympics for GB who have done absolutely terrible things to horses, albeit behind the scenes...
