Did anyone see it. Fell in love with huge dog owned by patti laBelle.
It looked like an Old English Mastiff but was a South African ?????

Anyone know what breed he could have been ?

I've found the answer - the wonders of Google

The dogs are South African Boerboels,

Anyone know any or have any experience of them.
Primarily want an impressive looking dog to hang out at my yard.

I would urge against getting a dog because of how it looks - our nearest town is full of people getting their arms pulled out by uncontrollable Neopolitans, Akitas and Malamutes because they 'look cool'.

Please don't take that the wrong way but looks should be the last thing on your mind with a big, powerful dog!

ETA: Edited to removed question over whether there are any in the UK. Just seen there are breeders in the UK - they look very athletic. Nice to see the breeders I looked at see health testing as very important. Would be cautious of linebreeding if the genepool in this country isn't huge.

Yes there are two breeders in this country and amazingly one is in my home town, she has a bitch who lives with her and her family
( two small kids , labrador and husband ).

They are impressive looking dogs but gentle, as I want a deterrent dog but also something that fits in with the family.

I'm far too old to be a chav and worry about looking cool lol

Have you met any yet? I would go along and see them 'at home' if you are interested.

Sorry if I seemed snarky, I saw yet another human being taken for a walk by an Akita on an extendable lead yesterday, Grr!
And the people in the village with the husky type puppy that they keep chained to a fence in a yard when they are out all day...yeah, it is lovely, it has blue eyes, but I am sure it would like to go for a run, not a pootle around the street...

Yes I certainly wouldn't buy on a whim without doing some research. I understand where you are coming from in terms of being ' overdogged' but a well behaved dog should be controllable for anyone. It would live indoors as part of our family and wouldn't be chained anywhere as thats not how I like dogs to be kept. If my research suggests they are not suitable for the home / family then I won't consider it further.

Good!

I wasn't for a minute suggesting that you might do either of the above, just explaining my snarkiness.

I just wish more people were as sensible as you. And thanks for introducing me to a breed I had no idea existed!

I love love love Boerboels. They are lovely dogs. I go out to South Africa quite a bit as I have a lot of family out there. These dogs are as common out there as Labradors are over here. lol.
The are used as guard dogs and I think their looks and size alone are a big enough deterent.
They are very loyal to their family and will protect you to the end but are loving and kind natured as well.
My son was 1 1/2 when he first went out to SA and my in laws had 3 of them on their plot. At first I was a bit of a wreck, wanting to know where he was all the time but soon relaxed knowing they were not going to eat him alive at any given moment and the main dog, chief , was big enough for my son to ride! He was huge! The blacks used to call him the 'lion dog' but woh betide anyone that wasn't invited on to the property. I seem to remember some coloured calling for us to rescue him from up a tree!!

I fell in love with them on my very first trip over there and I am determined I will own one one day.

The blacks? Some coloured?

Jeeeeeez. Er you may have South African family so I guess that explains your terminology but you live in the Uk now, you should know that those terms are offensive here.

Oh gosh. ok I am sorry if this offended anyone. Out there you have Black, Whites and coloureds. I am born and bred in the UK and I do have SA family and some of them are black so I am certainly not racist but I do apologise and I will think about the correct terminology in future. Wrists officially slapped but going back to the original post, I still love the dogs.
