Heading up for our eventing debut we thought we'd try out each discipline over consecutive days :p:cool:.

Ok so dressage was just schooling at home, but showjumping we headed down the road on Saturday for a local comp on grass. Perfect practice for a ODE!
Hmm except I was the only muppet that braved the weather lol, it really wasn't that bad, but that might have been because I was so local so only a 15min drive? Anyway the lovely venue owner was amazing and said I could pop round and change the jumps as I wanted . No pics of this but Skylla was super cool, one tiny peep at the fillers the first jump over, but no stopping and feeling very confident about it all!

Onto yesterday and the weather was not much better, very persistent heavy drizzle, though the wind had calmed down! However, more people were as daft as me and the class of 21 was only reduced down to 18 competitors for Skyllas first hunter trails attempt. The course was an interesting challenge as although the jumps were small (70-80cm) there were some technical questions and bravery needed!

I'd already decided trotting only was happening, Skylla is still barefoot and erm not the most balanced in canter yet! Arrived, got my bib, walked the course, threw up a little in my mouth at some of the fences , got on and away we went! Trotted out of the start and up to fence one, a small box in the tree line, apparently this had caught a few out and some hadn't got past fence one, think the ground being a little slippy and jumping through the trees (it was quite dark), meant it was a little off putting? However, Skylla trotted up, I said jump it, so she did . Looped back and jumped another small box back through the trees, onto the red train number 3 and I made a hash of getting the right line which resulted in:

Skylla - 'oooo look there's people over there what are they doing'
Me - 'Skylla theres a fence we need to jump here'
Skylla - 'Hello people'
Me - 'SKYLLA'
Skylla - 'Oh hooman you did not tell me there was an obstacle here?'

Circled (ok we could have jumped it from a standstill, but it was a genuine green mistake of me not getting her focus enough in time!) and she jumped it super on the second attempt. Skylla thought she was great by this point so cantering happened, I saw fence 4 and thought best trot :p, popped the log and approached the bank to trakehner with a water tray underneath (vomit in mouth moment!) small but perfectly terrifying! Skylla spooked at the sand at the bottom of the bank, I told her to man up and she could get her toes dirty, she then popped up and over, zero cares given! Onto a hanging rail, down a slope to a very bright tyre fence painted as a zebra :D, back up to the liquorice allsorts fence no problems here, over a small step up to some undulating ground and the approach to the water!

Remember I said the course needed brave pants? The water was a small roll top in, and then a small roll top out, Skylla wondered why the rider had clenched so much her arse might explode but trotted through still pondering the riders odd reaction :p:cool:. Out and now thinking we are awesome, Skylla is awesome, Tuffy Tilley is awesome, love xc it's such a buzz!

Onwards to the a log down a slope to another log at the bottom, quick turn left (ok slow trotting turn left), and onto the combination! Three fences with a stride between, Skylla said yep that's ok . Small canter in a controlled straight line fashion, before trotting for the step down.

As you can see, the hedge that I though looked big was no issue, the yellow house easy peasy and the x poles with a coffin in the middle super easy! She's still a touch wobbly at keeping straight when her focus drifts, but that is definitely something we can work on! Out back up the step, small canter again before trotting down the slope and over the barrel and over the last fence and finished!!!

I'd forgotten the high of xc even at small heights and trotting lol. The course seemed to be causing some issues so hung about to see where we'd come, only managed to bag an amazing 6th place even with the stop and million time faults!!

Ordered some of the pro pictures so will share them too when I have them! Really feel like the eventing dream will happen with this little grey horse!

That rosette is bonkers but I love it. Sounds like great practice and she did good. Also sounds quite a technical course for that height.

I do wonder about trying trot when I feel F backing off. And we sometimes have the same loss of focus (usually these things happen at the first few fences away from home( so I’m working on that too!

Super technical for the height, I'm not really surprised there were so many eliminations but a great test! I love the rosette, not had one like it before!

Ah we love trotting, it gives us control and time to look at the fence, slow down, soft hands and then leg to say jump it, seems to be a winning combination currently!

Lovely pictures AH she's so beautiful. Well done :)

Skylla thinks she's amazing, so many people told her she was pretty over the weekend lol!

Fantastic round! That's the way to do it with a green horse - nice and gently, loads of time to look at the fences (unless there are distracting humans of course) and a rider who who remembered to wear her brave pants!!!!

Haha the poor fence judges must have wondered why they were so interesting at number three lol, and to be honest Skylla makes it super easy to be brave, as she is just so brave herself .

Link to the pro pictures, may have a few on order!

Just wondering what your vets are saying now about the horse they practically wrote off as lame behind?????

Great report!

The hedge!! I love it.

I know! The video makes it look small (to be fair it really wasn't 'that' big), but it jumped super!

Aww she looks so cool! Well done!

Super cool , first XC comp and she made a water trakehner and a jump into water look easy!

Haha to be fair they weren't my regular vets, but I'd hope they would see it was strength not lameness now! Current Osteo vet is very happy with her!
Thank you x

I've watched your progress with Skylla with interest Alex, because I too have people mistaking weakness for lameness in my TB, (though not my vets or physio, who can see the truth). Skylla's looking absolutely terrific and I'm so envious of your XC outing, I'm thinking of starting jumping again when I thought I'd given it up for good.

See what you've started 😁 ?!?

Haha you should definitely give it a go!

It's a funny one lameness vs weakness, and something I think that needs an experienced person to see the horse in question. At the end of the day you work a weak horse correctly it will improve and a lame one won't, so easy to find out which it is really! It's a bit tricky going against the grain, but I think if you're surrounded by the right people (vets/ physio's/ farriers/ etc) then take faith in what they see.

Some riders just make every horse they own look lame as well which complicates matters. Its pretty easy to see in your case that its weakness, in a young horse built the way she was I imagine it probably would have ended up as lameness if you hadnt done something. Theres been such a huge improvement and change in her shape, and all relatively quickly as well. It just shows what correct work and sympathetic riding can do!

I cant help but look at her and think what a brilliant driving trials horse she would have been! But I guess theres not much difference at all between eventing and driving trials when it comes down to it, and she looks like shes going to make a nice eventer as well :)

Well done! She's very bold and unphased isn't she. Great round.

Always been bold, as soon as she figures it out she’s all over it lol.

Great report
She's just so cool:cool:

When is your next venture?

She’s going express eventing next weekend 😱, so SJ and XC on the same day!!!

See it scares me to think of her or Topaz as carriage horses, they’re ‘so’ sharp and attached to a carriage, eurgh it gives me shivers!!!

But holding out for an eventer in there!

Fab report, so glad to see Skylla and you doing so well and having so much fun!

*coughs* she’s a chiro vet :).

Doh 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ I knew it didn’t seem right when I wrote it! Sorry to the wonderful Angela Holland, who is most definitely a Chiropractic Vet!

Gorgeous grey, and lovely photos. I love how confident she looks in the videos, like 'yep, just gunna pop over these, effortlessly!' Really like the 3rd photo. Is she barefoot?

That's exactly what she's like, as soon as she understands the question she is totally fine , having a straightforward horse is awesome after a completely neurotic one!

Yep, never been shod as she was a little nervy when I got her and never needed to since, might change with all the jumping on grass but I'm happy to be slow and steady for the moment!
