My loan horse went to the vets last night to have her legs looked at, owner mentioned something about a solid lump out of the side of her jaw.
Vet had been out to do her teeth at the end of September and was aware of the slab fracture, but since then, it had got progressively worse.
It's the second pre molar, so not too far back in the mouth, but as a result of the slab fracture, the tooth is being pushed out by the two either side, which means this is going out into her gum.
This morning she was due to have the tooth removed under sedation, but even with a huge dosage she was still having none of it :( Therefore, she has got to have a general anaesthetic tomorrow afternoon to have it removed while she is knocked out.

Has anyone got any experiences of this? How was the recovery process and length? Any differences you noticed in your horse?

Many thanks
Lizzie.

Hi,
My boy had his 3rd cheek molar removed under GA. Sedation was tried first but the fracture tooth broke, he had a buccotomy, as in removing a section of his skull and knocking the tooth out from the outside in. It was a longish op but he came round fine and looked much better than I expected. He had loads of staples in his face but I was riding 3 weeks later.
The problem we had was a recurring infection, he had the worst smelling discharge from his nose, it was horrendous, so he had trephines and lots of antibiotics over the following 2 years. It then settled down but did come back every now and again. Even now 8 yrs on, we get the odd few days when I can smell the dreaded smell. It is unforgettable. I dont worry about it now, he has never been ill from it (touches wood) and apart from needing the dentist twice a year, you wouldnt know he'd had anything done to him.
Good luck for tomorrow.
