So are [some] horses not bred for meat? Just owners allowing them to be sent to abbotoirs?

[/ QUOTE ]

You obviously missed the several discussions that have gone on from time to time. In short, some people breed indiscrimately, knowing that if an animal doesn't sell as a riding horse or pony, it still has a value as meat. In other cases animals that have been much loved pets will finish their days as meat.

Either scenario in this country is preferable to an unwanted animal being touted around the sales, neglected or being treated cruelly which is what can happen, often when horses are sold on in good faith.

I know it wuld be better for them, but 16 year old, easily emotional girl here wants to buy them all

I was just wondering if anybody could actually buy themfrom slaughter.

And im not one for protesting either, I have a very short attention span.

Yes you can buy from foreign slaughter houses def as a lot of horses imported into this country cheap are slaughter house horses. I know one dealer in kent where most are from slaughter houses hence why they able to be sold so cheap.
Though some actually are ok and not complete write offs. You get the odd good one, where it just needs feeding up or something

Are you sure you are not just after a gift horse?
If the videos that you have seen really did upset you and therefore you are against the practice on the whole then you would go for the long term, most impact courses of action in order to improve conditions / get it banned. Surely you can see that out of all the horses that go to slaughter, rescuing one will do nothing - except get you a cheap horse?

I personally agree with horse slaughter so would leave well alone.

Just to point out that there ARE, in the UK, folks who breed fairly indiscriminately in the knowledge that if they cannot sell as kids ponies they can send for meat. In my eyes there IS a meat trade in the UK.

was just about to say this myself.
Yes there are people in this country who breed for meat.

Have you read my other posts? I explained that I wont be getting one [hence the smilie] on my OP. I was just curious if they could be bought after they had been handed over to them.

ETA: Its not the actual slaughter of them, just the way some are treated

there are horses that can be saved and become very good horses. at the yard i work on a few horses have been saved from slaughter and they have been top dressage horses that rich people have bought for their children. they cant handle the horse so it gets very naughty, they then decided to give it to the slaughter house who then gave it to YO. its now good at SJ, dresage, hacking an just generaly a great horse!

Can they be bought from abbitoirs anymore? Because I thought passports had to state whether they are for meat or not. Benn watching rather graphic videos on youtube and planning a rescue mission

I'm sorry but smiley or no smiley, how does that translate into 'I'm not planning to get one, I just want to know'????
