Is it legal to send horses to slaughter in the UK and EU? It has been outlawed for a while in the US with unintended consequences. Horses are now shipped to Canada or Mexico for slaughter and the conditions on the trucks can be awful. It was better for the horses when they could go to the local hunt kennels at the end of their lives.

Another classic case of people putting their feelings above animals. Move the ‘not nice thoughts’ out of the country and in turn make animals suffer further. If people stood up and demanded they were informed about how all animals were treated/travelled to slaughter conditions would be forced to improve. Rather than banning it from their local area so it’s out of sight and mind.

I can remember discussing this briefly on the model horse forum (many had real horses too) which had mainly North American members.

All I can say is that cognitive dissonance is alive and well. Plus the whole 'rescuing from a kill pen' gives lots of opportunity to make people feel very good about themselves and make money.

It’s legal in the UK but horses still get shipped abroad for meat via Ireland, so an awfully long journey for some. I’m guessing is to do with the price of meat on the continent? We don’t eat horse meat so I’d imagine the value is lower. There’s also not many abattoirs left that are licensed for horses now. We do still have fields full of coloured cobs destined for meat that don’t get there and end up suffering In fields, but I think that’s more to do with the status of owning them than the lack of disposal options.

I hope they don't ban it in Canada. At least some horses don't have too long a trip to Canada and it sounds like the process isn't as bad there.
I wish we would bring it back. It would save so many horses so much misery and the meat could be made into animal feed and Taco Bell "mystery meat."

what a ridiculous country USA is, mind you they did elect trump...say no more....................so so stupid of them and causing so much misery for the poor horses

I can’t get my head around the fact that they’ve banned horses going for slaughter, but seem happy to turn a blind eye to other, really cruel practices, such as the Tennessee Walking horses or those poor double muscled quarter horses. People are shooting each other every day because of their ridiculous gun laws, but you can’t have a horse humanely destroyed.

But the horse is alive...no matter what! Life is always more preferable to death. Even if that life is filled with suffering, pain and abuse. And if a horse has one leg broken, well just take it off and give it a false leg. Itll be okay.

It baffles me, truely.

There's a really interesting Youtube channel called Horse Plus Humane Society which is an American organization that fundraisers and then buys up the bin end at auctions. I am totally pro slaughter but not of wretched little creatures like that packed into huge trucks and transported 1000s of miles. It's well worth a watch as I think it highlights the issue really clearly- they are not all fluffy bunnies and sparkles and will take them home and have them put down if they need it or get them back up to health and rehome.

Merry Equimas, it's the horse side of the "pro-life" movement. Life at all costs even if it sucks out loud after being born.
