To follow on from my previous post my boy was pts yesterday. He had cuddles, a hooley in the field after the box rest he has had, we shared a flask of tea and he ha the biggest feed he has ever seen I think, eyes popped out of his head! A piece of my heart will always always always belong to him and I will never step foot on a yard without thinking of him, but it was for the best and he will be eternally happy now.

Hope you don't mind but I thought I would share some of my fave photos of him!

Oh you poor thing, so sorry. It is always so hard to say goodbye, but so the best thing for any horse who has to go. RIP big fella.

I lost by old boy a few weeks back and I honestly know how broken you're feeling. I'm so sorry for you. I promise you'll be able to look back and smile at your memories soon. Take care x

I am sorry. Your lovely big lad was a lucky boy to be in such safe and caring hands. Sadly many horses do not have the protection of loyal owners, as has been high lighted recently on the forum, never feel you have done the wrong thing you have not.

If you go on and have another horse in the future, that horse will have a wonderful home.

Thankyou everyone for taking the time to write a reply, I raised a glass to him last night in my living room. I am heartbroken but know I did the right thing. I'll see him again at Rainbow Bridge when it's my time to go

Oh, bless you OP for doing right by your boy regardless of how hard it is for you.

I am just about to go and pour myself a glass of margarita, I shall raise one for him. xxx

I'm so sorry Marie1, it's heart breaking having to say goodbye but if it's the best thing to do then it's also the kindest.
(((hugs)))
RIP big lad.

Is this the horse that went lame on xmas eve? I am so sorry. He was beautiful. RIP big lad. And so sorry his owners didn't step up to the mark!

Yes it is.. he was very lame and weak behind as a result so even if he came sound after the box rest or field rest (which would have driven him crazy), he would only have been a happy hacker which wouldn't have been enough for him to keep him mentally stimulated. As he was 17 as well it was the kindest thing for him. And thankyou, I agree

I'm so sorry for your loss, but to echo others, you did an incredibly brave and very kind thing for him and made his last day a very special one. He was a truly stunning boy, and how lucky he was to have such a caring home with you. Sending big hugs your way xxx

What a beautiful boy. It takes a lot of guts to do the right thing even when it hurts so badly. He'll always thank you for being so selfless for his sake. Sleep tight big lad xx

What a stunning boy he was. So sorry for your loss. Remember, you are hurting so he doesn't have to. Brave decision and thoughts are with you.
