It was dusk before I managed to take my dog for a walk/run last night. She is a terrier so will sometimes disappear and not come immediately to call, but she always appears from somewhere. Not last night. She got on the trail and something and I saw her disappear into the hedge, but kept calling and walking back home, confident that she would suddenly appear, as normal. She is good, and on one occasion ran back across a couple of fields to find me when I was having a sit down, rather than just bunk off home.

Until last night - disappearing into the hedge was the last I saw of her. It was virtually dark by then. She wasn't at the back door when I got back (this is on our own land, by the way). Nor did she apear in the garden at bedtime. This is unusual. So I spent a few hours with no sleep wondering what had happened to her and how would I find her - run over, stuck in a tree or down a badger set, run over by a train, in a fight with a fox or badger, kidnapped and stolen? Luckily there are no sheep for miles.

Well she turned up at breakfast time - and yes, she did look a bit guilty and is now fast asleep in front of the Rayburn.
A night on the tiles. Naughty dog.
