She is fab in all ways and just rtrying to chill her out and break the racing routiene. She is always very aware of what other horses are doing (as she is now on a smaller yard than previously)

I was just thinking about trying something in her feed to take the edge off. Its not a real issue, but if there are any suggestions from people as to any supplements to try I would be very glad to hear!

I was thinking along the lines of Brewers Yeast or a magnesium supplement?

Any other suggestions?!!

i have just started to feed m slighty neurotic young boy on the molichaff calmer, ive been told it just slows their brains down a little bit to help them process the info. He is getting easier but i dont know whether that it completely down to the food but he definately is looking much healthier ad happier!!!

Oh, I hadnt heard about that! Have just checked the website and it contains magnesium, so it probably does have some benefits.

She is out 24/7 and only on basic nuts and chaff twice a day to try and get her to fill out a little. It has been really windy too recently, so I dont think that helps.

She is not dangerous, typical Ex racer, and much better after a good workout, just be nice for her to chill right out xx

Laurasf- I agree about the mollichaff calmer, it is brilliant stuff! It looks so cheap and useless, but it actually does work. I noticed a big difference from when I had my horse on just hifi to when I had him on the calmer. On the calmer he just looks much happier and it def takes the edge off him a little- not much, but there is a significant difference.

I would maybe add boiled linseed to it to keep her condition on.

Thanks OB, so another reccomendation for the chaff! I will definatly try and get my hands on some.

I will also bear in mind the linseed!

This is her at the moment...

Hi, What else do you feed along with the Mollichaf calmer? I have got a ex racer who doesnt keep her weight very well, and quickly looses condition. she is currently bein fed "1 x cup calm and condition, 1 x scoop of apple chaff, 1 x scoop pink powder, 1 x scoop magnitude and 1 x scoop of stroppy mare (she is very "marish")" she can still sometimes get very excitable and as you said typical ex racer... never 100% chilled.

Gosh, that must cost a fortune?!

Maybe swap your apple chaff for the calm chaff people have spoken about? xx

silvershadow- she is beautifull- how is she bred? She looks in good condition to me.
IMO the best thing for weight gain is either a) very good grass or b) ad-lib haylage. Or maybe put some haylage out for her if the grass is not great. But boiled linseed also works wonders for them ( I mean boiled linseed flakes which you boil up at home, not that ready-linseed crap, which is useless)

hello i feed my nutty exracer mare, (who also came looking like a hatrack) 1 scoop fibergy 1 scoop of power and performance (next one up to c+c, but it is basically the same so may go back to c+c), 2 scoops of pink powder, 2 scoop of mint (fussy eater) and 1 scoop of oestress, split into 2 feeds a day, she isn't nutty on that and her weight is ideal. good luck with finding what works for your exracers it has taken me ages to suss the right mix for my 2

lol yes it is quite expensive!! i have only had her about 3 months and she was very underweight and in terrible condition when I got her, she looks a lot better now. As this calm chaff contains magnesium in it.... could i drop the magnitude calmer? I hate feed its soooooo confusing!! im used to a heavy cob who just gets a handful of chaff to keep him happy lol x

Thanks OB! I am a proud mum!!

She is by Overbury (NH Stallion)

The grass is pretty poor at the current yard, so she has hay out there, she will soon move to my place where the grass is so long!

I will need to get one of those tea urns or something to boil it up? A friend used to do that with barley and add the linseed to the barley and boil overnight- it was lovely on a cold morning to add to the feed.

Is linseed very much? (£)? xx

Brilliant! You are a bottomless well of information OB! Thanks for the links.

I will see how she does on the lush grass when she moves and over the winter and if she starts to drop condition I will definatly go with this.

In the meantime, I think I will check out this molichaff calmer and maybe but some additional magnesium!!

P.s. She is the only Overbury I know- but she does him proud!! xx

I also feed the mollichaff calmer as it take the edge off my boy who can be a bit sharpe. You think that cost a lot. This is what my 28 TBX gets, plus add lib haylage

1 scoop of mollichaff calmer
2 scoops of spillers senior conditioning mix
1 scoop of barley
1 scoop of build up
topspec feed balancer
and suger beet

It is crazy, that if my weekly food shopping bill came to even half of what my feed merchants take off me, I would panic! But as its for the horses....!!

My older girls shoes are £120 each time!!! I would NEVER spend that one shoes, but for her its ok!!???

The crazy wold of horsekeeping! xx

My ex racer sounds quite similar to yours SS81, not a nasty bone in his body but he tends to get anxious about things happening around him, he is a bit of a worrier. He also can't handle too much sugar in his diet, haylage upset the equilibrium, as did too much grass in the spring. I have been feeding him a magnesium supplement since April and it has really helped, he seems a lot more settled in general and looks fantastically well on 24/7 turnout with 2 very small feeds of chaff and hi fi nuts, just enough to hide his mag in

Well..... she is not too good in company of others! If we hack with another her head is by her knees and she bronchs! She is really anxious when horses come up to her diagonal view behind her?

We think she has either been penned in racing, or a bad attempt at covering her.

Saying this though- it is not a nasty trait- more of just looking after herself and letting the other horse not to come too close (not that they want too as her back end is so powerful and she can really lift her heels!!)

Another TB at my yard is very sensitive to sugar too- he is on Simple Systems diet.

I dont think it is a sugar thing really- more of just new routiene and adjusting.

I have bitten the bullett and ordered some magnesium and brewers yeast- will also pick up a bag of the chaff when shops open again.
