The past couple of days have worried me. H arrived back from riding on Saturday and complained that Hippo had no idea how to flex, and that they had had "an argument". Hippo can flex, though can be reluctant to do so on her left rein. I hopped on and walked her around, got her to flex on both reins. Praised her and got off.

Instructor had H lunge Hippo in side reins. TBH, I didn't see any improvement. Not sure H was fully comfortable lunging her...Hippo is tricky to lunge until she's used to you.

Anyway, Sunday was a jumping clinic. Again, issues with flexing. And observing from the sidelines, it seemed to me that H was a bit annoyed with her. Trainer was happy enough; noted that it is her left rein that is the issue.

Approaching one of the jumps, H gave Hippo what I would class as a pony club kick. It wasn't necessary. Hippo was already going fast enough and was getting set to jump. I saw that it threw her off a little. She jumped the first pole well enough but was by now speeding up. As a result, she almost mistimed the second pole. She managed it, but had to kick up her haunches slightly to clear it. This shook H's seat. After the jumps, Hippo had to turn right. H came off. She wasn't hurt.

H hacked Hippo back up to yard after clinic. Usually, I would meet her up there after she rides and get on myself. But when I reached the yard, Hippo was in her box and untacked. H said she hadn't put her out yet, in case I wanted her rugged up. I said not to worry, too nice a day for rug.

I took a look at Hippo whilst OH was fetching grooming kit. The right corner of her mouth was slightly cracked. Possibly from when H came off. Possibly Hippo pulled away whilst being unbridled. Don't know for sure either way, but it wasn't like that prior to the clinic.

Took Hippo out of box and groomed her thoroughly. She was able to eat/drink, so just dabbed some sudocreme on her mouth. Then found several small blisters on her girth area. Again, these were not there prior to Sunday. I groom her every day and always check carefully for lumps, etc. I suspect they are due to her being ridden in a girth that wasn't clean (sand and sweat on the underneath:mad:) but can't be 100% sure.

She is, in fairness, only just coming into proper work. Although H has been riding her for over a fortnight now, and has certainly ridden her for longer periods before yesterday without blisters. And I rode her regularly at old yard without incident. I am concerned that perhaps H did not clean the tack on Saturday before using it again on Sunday. It was sweaty and needed cleaning so I had offered to take it home the night before to clean it myself but H assured me I didn't need to.

Have been cleaning the area with salt water and will treat with white spirits or witch hazel. However, I'm not sure if I should allow her to be ridden until it's healed over fully. So have brought tack home for now. Will check area again tomorrow, but so far it's healing well. I know she has very delicate skin. I've always been fussy about it. May also buy her a padded girth cover thingy.

I know I'm probably fussing over nothing, so I just pointed it out politely to both H and instructor, and left it at that. But also needed to air my thoughts, so came on here. At the moment, I'm no longer sure if I want H to keep riding Hippo, but maybe I'm just being too protective of her:o

Should I wait until the blisters have gone completely before riding? Also, am I right to worry that perhaps H is being too hard on Hippo? I'm glad her jumping is progressing, but it's only been two weeks. She's never jumped in her life before this. Don't want her to end up hating it.

Booze of your choice and key lime pie, if you got this far!

If you do - get a proper sheepskin one. When the sweat is dry you can brush it off with a plastic curry but you will still need to wash it regularly so make sure that it is washable sheepskin.

I had a young girl (12/13) come and ride my chestnut mare a few times. She was quite a nice quiet rider walk/trot/canter in the school, but I wouldn't have let her hack or jump her. CM is quite nappy if you aren't confident, she has a quick whip-around in her if a flower looks at her funny, plus she will stop at jumps if you don't give her confidence.

The girl started to nag about finding w/t/c boring so I stopped her coming because I didn't want the girl to get hurt and i didn't want all my confidence building ruined.

It's up to you. I wouldn't be happy that the mare's mouth has been damaged. Can you ask the instructor to concentrate on an independent seat and light hands rather than jumping for a couple of lessons?

Faracat - thank you for the tip. I will look for washable sheepskin. If I decide to allow H to keep riding Hippo, I will ask my instructor to limit her to flatwork, within the school, at least for a while. But no, I'm very unhappy about her mouth. I've never hurt any horse's mouth:(

I've obviously missed previous threads.

Who is H and why is she riding your (?) horse? And is Hippo an highland (HiPo) or just called Hippo (which is a cool name:D)

Yes. It is a loose ring French link snaffle. The sort with the peanut in the middle. I've had her in it since November, prior to that she was in a happy mouth. She prefers her current bit, though she isn't really fond of bits at all.

Hippo is my muddy little Arab. H is a confident teenage rider who has been riding her several days a week to keep her exercised. She rides lots of horses for various people.

She has been riding Hippo after I came off and scared the living heck out of myself. The plan was, she got to ride, Hippo got exercised, and I got to work on my confidence issues.

I did see that you'd asked about going bitless, have you decided to try this?

The only bit that my grey likes is a Myler comfort snaffle, but they are expensive so I was lucky that I found a bargain on ebay. If you know someone who has one, it might be worth trying.

Lozenge bits are nice though. :)

How about, giving Hippo a break until her mouth heals. Then get H to do a couple of flatwork lessons. Really watch how she rides the other horses too, is she a 'handy' rider, does she catch the horse's mouth when she jumps?

Are you riding other horses to get your confidence back?

This sounds like a good idea, thank you:) Yes, I have weekly lessons on various school horses. I am able to walk, trot and hack out in company. We have determined that anything above 15hh is too high for me to keep breathing:o

For a while, I was too scared to even look at a horse. I didn't post about it much, just got on with it. But it was horrible. Now I'm actually able to handle Hippo again without help. And I can mount up without panicking. Don't even need to be on the lead rope anymore:D

That's such a shame but lovely you're getting someone else to ride whilst you build yourself back up. I could list many horses round here who never get ridden as their owners are too scared of them :(

She's a teenager so hopefully still used to being told what to do and listening to adults (if she's not, find a new teenager!).

Explain your concerns (through the RI if you're not feeling up to facing her directly) and take it from there.

Most kids would be mortified if they knew they're been causing the horse pain, but many don't yet have the intuition to see it for themselves yet : how many adults riders look back on things they used to do to their horse and cringe!?! A girth sore is probably not somethign H even considered!

H will probably be feeling a bit p'd about falling off and many teenager turn that into sulkiness, so do take that into account when she took her back to the stable directly.

Talk to H about it. Explain Hippo has a cracked mouth and a girth sore and suggest she practises lunging her until it's heal? If she flounces off over not bieng able to ride than she's not the right rider for Hippo.

We all accidently hurt our horses at some point :o so as long long as it's not deliberate, or through temper, I would harden your heart a little. H is still learning and you will have to take the rough with the smooth. If you want all smooth you'll need to pay a proffesional to ride her!

Thanks guys. I'm glad I'm not over reacting! OH has been chewing the furniture over this...

I will talk to H tomorrow about my concerns. I think maybe she's a little overstretched as well: I found out that she's riding around three horses a day, every day. It's a lot, especially for a teenager. She doesn't like to fail at anything, and pushes herself accordingly.

Dont worry too much about the mouth unless it is a regular occurance. Sometimes horses get chapped lips just like we do especially if they salivate a lot.

Educate the girl about the girth and dont let her ride untill it heals. Some horses are more sensitive than others and I bet she has never had to think about a reaction like that before.

I would keep an eye on the pony club kicks hopefully a good instructor will point out it is inappropriate? I guess she fell off becuase of them so hopefully she will learn the hard way :) I'd give her a chance it is a steep learing curve and everyone has differant expectations of how things are done with their horse.

Indeed: pony club kicks and Hippo equals rocket speed:rolleyes: I think H may have been frustrated with her over the whole flexing thing and just kicked harder than she would usually. Will keep my eyes peeled though!
