My horse has a runny bum every day! his droppings are all formed and normal looking and he isn't in any discomfort. I asked the vet and she put it down to rich haylage, he is now on hay but still wet bottom every day. I am giving him protexin daily and cut his magnesium down, think he had been having too much of that which could have caused a reaction. Any other ideas?

Is his worming up to date? Can you ask the vet to test a sample for you? If there's definitely nothing more sinister going on and nothing else has changed, I would maybe get a syringe of protexin Quick Fix and use that for a few days to try and sort him out and then go back to your normal Protexin gut balancer, assuming that is what you are using now.

Hi I wrote about this problem in an earlier thread as our little Irish pony just can't have haylage without getting a mmmmmm how shall I put it? 'Juicy bottom'? His actual droppings where fine but there would be all this excess juice which used to just run down his legs every time he went to the loo! We discovered when he was on a short period of enforced box rest, that hi fibre cubes dried him up a treat! We used to put 4 large coffees mugs in a treat ball twice daily for him to keep him occupied, and within a couple of days his bottom dried up! We now feed him these as routine, still in a treat ball and he has remained dry. It may not work for you but it's a cheap experiment at least. Good luck!

Thanks, yes wormed all up to date including several zero worm counts over last few years. The fibre cubes is very interesting. Can a horse be short of fibre when fed hay?

Just like the other post says a juicy bum! Lots of liquid then a normal formed dropping. Just ordered the protexin quick fix.

My boy has exactly the same problem, I have just given him the protexin quick fix, seems a bit better! The only thing that helps the most is Happy Tummy charcoal at a high dose! Its weird as he has never had this problem so badly before, it is just this year!
