Hello,

My vet told me today that my horse has slightly raised liver enzemyes. He has got an infection which is being treated with antibiotics. The vet has also told me to reduce the protein in his feed. He will be re-tested in a month's time to see if they have gone down.

I am really worried about him. Has anyone else experienced this and what has been outcome please?

Many thanks

Raised liver enzymes mean your ned's liver is struggling. Could be a passing liver infection or something more sinister such as ragwort poisoning or St Johns Wort poisoning. The re-test will hopefully show everything back to normal as livers have amazing powers of re-generation and recovery (except when the damage is due to ragwort poisoning in which case the damage is permanent). In the meantime, by giving your ned his calories through LOW protein and HIGH sugars you will help his liver in this critical period. All animals need some protein so don't cut it out altogether, but what protein ned DOES have for the next few weeks must be very high quality. I have a rescued mare with major and permanent ragwort damage to her liver and she is on D&H Alfalfa, D&H Pasture Mix, Speedibeet, Yea Sac and Milk Thistle. I'd get your ned on Milk Thistle immediately pbc as it has been shown to support the liver. D&H make a brill one in a small tub, about a tenner I think. If I were you I wouldn't worry yet as it could be just a passing infection but liver problems are never to be taken lightly so keep a close eye on your ned and get the repeat bloods done. Fingers crossed all is ok - PM me if you need any more info xxx

Yes my horse had this last year, I also recomend the milk thistle. He recovered within 3 - 6 months he was quite poorly as Box_of_Frogs says the liver repairs itself and seems to have done no long lasting effects

Thank you so much for all your advice. I will get him on to Milk Thistle straight away.

I have only had him a few weeks so this is a pretty worrying time for me. I appreciate your advice and help.

My mare had this last year and had to have two biopsys done as the enzymes weren't coming down. She got very dull and lethargic. Milk thistle is very good and also B vitamins, Dodoson and Horrell do one called B - sure that I got through my vets and was able to put it on the insurance too. Milk thistle seeds are good if you can get some of them as they are supposed to be stronger, i think I got some off ebay. If your horse is dull and lethargic then you try Global herbs Restore. I wouldn't worry too much. A shetland on our yard has a raised count at the minute but it has come down a lot in the past month.
Do you know what the count was out of interest?

As the others have said i can highly reccomend Milk Thistle it worked wonders for my old pony
