 well i went on a long hack this morning about 2 hours and as there was some road work put my yellow exercise sheet on (as normal) i met a couple of riders who were all polite walked to pass etc. then about 10 Min's from home i was walking down the road and 4 horses were coming towards me think they had been cantering as were all blowing but one horse was very wound up jumping around etc, as they moved over so we could pass he spooked and whipped round turns out was scared of my yellow sheet my boy just looked at it (the horse) and carried on (thankfully) i just got some snotty comment " its your silly rug he not seen one of them things before" as she went prancing off into the distance i noticed she had NO HAT ON just a woolly one now i no people ride in school with no hat and that is there choice i personally always were mine but seriously out on the road on a very highly strung tb i was honestly quite shocked.
would you feel the same i must add none had any hi viz on it was quite a dark dingy morning but i dont think its much to at least were your hat. DO YOU ?

Couldn't care less if they wear hats or not - their head, their business.

If the visibility was low / they were on the roads, I think they owe it to their horses to put some hi vis on them at least. Especially if it's likely to tit around. For its sake and the unsuspecting driver, if not the rider.

Perhaps if the foolish girl had any wit her horse would be used to Hi-Viz and there would be no problem when it saw others with sense. :) As for the no hat, my guess is it would make little difference to the IQ of the non wearer.

no i guess you right all i could think off was god if she comes off i along with her friends will be scraping her brain off the road while having a loopy horse running around the countryside. country lanes are dangerous enough as many blind bends so i do always were some hi viz so hopefully they will see me that bit earlier. i do get looked at by some as if i'm mad and now snotty comments as i'm scaring there horse. still never mind there choice i guess

I would rather go out lit up like a Christmas tree and protecting my head, than get knocked by a car and end up splatted on the road with brain damage and an injured horse.
I'm aware it can still happen but anything to protect us a bit more.
K x

I wouldn't bother, leave her to the crows :D

If people's horses are so other worldly that they have never encountered hi vis and think it is scary, I would say that is a reflection of their lack of training ;)

I was once teaching on a busy weekend and was running a bit late going from one lesson to escorting a hack. I remembered everything else but actually forgot to change my baseball cap for my hat. No one on the yard noticed, I only realised when on the way home and I went to scratch my head!! Never ever done it again tho.
You say she was wearing a wooly hat, benefit of the doubt she MAY have done the same?
No excuse for a horse not knowing what high viz is though!!

yes i totally agree and the more i think about it the less shocked i am really. I tend to come across all sorts while out riding and have done lots with my boy to sort of prepare him from a yearling for idiots and random things that do happen while out and about so on the whole we cope just fine but i will always wear a hat and some hi viz (dependant on weather and time of year) still i'm sure there is always someone out there that will do something allot worse just hope i dont come across them :D:D

Ive done this too... but went into the school walked around for a bit and suddenly realised I had no hat on, just my warm woolley one.. I did hop right off and went to get it from where I had hung it on the stable...

If the horse was already wound up and jumping all over the place, if its anything like some of the horses Ive ridden it would be looking for an excuse to spook at anything, sounds like your rug gave it the perfect opportunity..

Fair comment - Their head, their business - but I feel gutted for their family, parents, Husband/wife, and friends etc that have to pick up the pieces when they have had their heads scrapped up off the road and deal with the concequences of the aftermath of their selfish actions. Hardly fair when a 30 second action of putting a hat on correctly could save such heartache.

Hi Viz I have always thought is for the horses protection - so other road users see them quicker. Who would want to put their horse in such a poistion on purpose. Some people make you want to spit !

In thirty years of riding its never been without a hat and three of my horses id trust with my life but still wear hat also now body protecter and gloves. Im not stupid enough to think im never comming of.

what an idiot, if she used hi viz, then maybe her horse would not have been soo surprised.

TBH I think it should be a legal requirement that all road users, rider, cyclists and walkers, have to wear hi viz, surely that is only sensible!!!!!!

As for the lack of hat, maybe if she fell off and banged her head, it might knock some sense into her!!!!!!
