What sort of mattress do you sleep on?
I know its wierd of me asking but I suffer with a bad lower back, as I`m sure a lot of riders do and I always feel worse in the morning which points to my mattress and I need a new one but not sure which one. I`ve got a friend that suggested I stay away from the foam ones as this made her back loads worse.
So do I go for an orthopedic one, a thick one? hard, soft?
Is your mattress comfy, if so, which sort is it?
Thanks

I sleep on shavings "dust free" very comfy. my owner has some sort of square, springy thingy, think it's a silent night

It's not so much the mattress, although I do suffer after a night or two on a soft one, but the base. I have a bed with wooden slats, which gives the mattress a solid base. A sprung base is murder for my back

I find my pillow gives me a bad back. I have a very flat worn-out cushion that I use now and my back doesn't ache as much any more. I bought a nice memory foam pillow thingy once but it's hell for my lower back as I sleep on my front! I now use it as a seat saver for when I'm at my computer

My mattress is a bog-standard sprung one - cheap and cheerful but it has so many collapsed springs it's now becoming cheap and nasty

Im exactly the same, Im all right once Im up but sometimes I literally crawl out of bed and its awful when I lie on my front. We bought a memory foam topper to go on a decentish mattress. It definately helped but hasnt cured me. I will read this with great interest. Oh I long for a decent pain free night

Under no circumstances should you buy a hard mattress if you have a bad back. I have broken my back and in a separate incident I have ruptured discs in my lower back. I went along with the general view that a hard mattress was the best for the back so I bought one - and my back became far far worse. the neuro surgeon who operated on my spine insisted that I bought a supportive mattress, one that supported my body for the full length. A hard mattress basically gives you no support, your bum and your shoulders touch it but the rest of the back doesnt. It is vital to get a mattress that supports the full length. A memory foam, or latex mattress is brilliant. A soft mattress is no good as it fails to support at all and can cause more pain.

I use a Tempur memory foam bed. I had surgery on my back 4 years ago for ruptured discs and trapped nerves in my legs. I have used this bed since then and have found it to really help.
If I stay away from home and use a different bed, I get a lot of aches and pains in the morning. I would never use a hard mattress.
Also, just a thought. Have you tried using a TENS machine for pain relief? My physio recommended it to me as an alternative to pain killers. It really helps me for sciatic pain, they are sold in chemists, you could ask a pharmacist about it.

If you have a feather and black store near you, they have a testing bed with a mattress that can be manipulated to assess what kind of mattress would suit you best... there will be a list f stores on their website, bit pricy but they usually have some good sales.

have a firm mattress. anytime i sleep on something soft i have an incredibly bad back the next day - it's bad enough anyway so i dont want to encourage it! i think i also got a silent night one, they are a;ways having bed sales so it may be worth shopping around a bit first

I have a memory foam one which is OK but gets a bit sweaty! Will probs get half and half next time.
I also swear by seeing a McTimoney chiropractor, only need to see her every 3 months but my back hasn't felt so good in years.

My mattress is rock hard - its the only thing I can sleep on! Whenever I have to sleep in hotels, my back always kills me the next day where the mattresses are so soft

Mine is a Myles Harley, apparently

Myers Majesty.

It's an easy-care mattress which means that you don't have to turn it, yet it is (according to the label) well-ventilated.

It has a top layer of latex and a really well sprung interior. I've had it for about two years now and it's the best mattress I have ever slept on. In fact, it's probably the best mattress in the world!

You want to go for something that is of medium hardness. Something that is pocket sprung with foam on the top. Silentnight do a wonderful one, its called a Willow Latex (about £500 for a 5ft) and mine should be arriving in the next week or so!!

I have at the moment an orthopaedic matress and it is the most uncomfortable thing I have EVER slept on. Both my OH and I wake up in the middle of the night because we can't get comfortable and its far too hard!!

The best thing I can advise is going into a furniture shop and just trying them out! My parents both work for the same company so I get a nice discount and also can try the beds out without the sale assistants thinking im weird!!
