Shamefully, Jake and Brig were never really trained to lead walk (straight form front door to car to woods, trained to heel without leads)

We would like the pups to walk nicely on leads as we have learnt that sometimes, leads are obviously needed. We have bought slip leads. Is this a good idea? I have researched and been a bit scared about the horror stories (http://www.fsas.ca/DogInfo/Training/Slip_Collar.htm).

Are we doing the right thing?

im not a fan im afraid; slip leads have their uses in trials etc where they can be 'slipped' on and off easily but the dogs are already trained to walk on a loose lead or at heel so so pressure is put on the neck.

im sure you can train them to walk at heel without using a collar or lead to help you :D

I have slip leads for short work and both my dogs are walked on choke chains (on the dead link but clipped to the live link in certain scenarios) and our dogs always have been, with no ill effects, but agree with NSN the best thing to do is teach the dog that walking beside you equals awesome times, pulling gets you nowhere.
I did use a slip lead to stop B pulling on the lead, it is a very long and boring story.

Having it the right way round, and positioning it correctly, as mentioned on that link, is everything. Am bookmarking it!

All I own is slip leads, my dogs don't pull at all, they are handy to carry when you have 10 dogs and easy to slip on and off, OH also uses them for the dogs he walks and makes a nifty halti with the slip, this saves him taking loads of haltis, as some of the walkers are pullers (owners never bother to correct it)
If I collect a boarder I always remove it lead and slip a slip lead on, they are also fab for safety there is no escape from a slip lead:rolleyes: unlike a slack collar.

Henry has slip leads for most days, a police style lead for hillwalking (normally with harness) and obediance (hah!) classes (without harness), and a long-line if necessary... I like to keep my options open. Why stick at just one lead, is what I'm saying:D
