I am having a shelter built for my Shetland pony to restrict from too much grass, how high would you recommend the slip rails should be so he can look over the top one. He is currently in his stable with a door guard and chain bar when I’m there and he’s very good at staying behind them even though he has been on box rest for 8 weeks. I measured the chain guard and it measures 36 inches which he’s comfortable with but should the slip rails be higher??

I would not have a slip rail any higher or he may creep underneath. My Sec A can get under anything that's higher than the base of his neck!

Put 3 x sheep hurdles in a box square from the doorway. My late mini liked that as she could squeeze just outside the overhang and enjoy sun and rain.....
Easy to fix by either stapling baler twine on each side of the doorway to tie them to or screwing in tie rings to slot the leg points into for a better job.

I’m having 2 slip rails put up so he shouldn’t be able to go underneath hopefully, he’s quite good and has never escaped even when electric didn’t work. I’m hoping to make a pen around the shelter to start with. So only need slip rails for a few days till I’ve sorted a starvation pen out. The grass has been so rich this summer with the rain and sun he has EMS so I have to be very careful. Luckily we caught it early and saw the signs so we are just having to manage him differently from now on. He’s 15 and never had problems before, will have to be very vigilant from now on. Thanks for all the ideas. I think the sheep hurdles sounds a good idea if slip rails don’t work 🤞 we know what we are dealing with now. Just hard keeping the weight off him. Sugar free diet and exercise is the key to keep him right.

You can increase the hurdles to make a decent pen as they slot into each other. Hope you find a reasonable solution.
