I have been off work now for a week.

I have had one orthopaedic surgeon (from work) and my gp tell me I have slipped a disc! Two people cant be wrong, I thought I had just strained my back and OH said I was in denial. I can't deny it now. I may even need surgery!!

Am frustrated, I cant sit in a normal chair, I cant bend down to stroke my cat , I have trouble putting my knickers on and I cant see to my horse. Not sure what is worse the pain or the not being able to care for my horse.

All this from a previous riding injury which I ignored for 10 years and pushing a heavy wheelbarrow up a steep hill full of horse's droppings.

Thank goodness for my OH for looking after me, the cats, the horse, himself and still working 10 hours a day!

Look after your backs and do not ignore any back symptoms (like I did!)

Oh no that doesn't sound good at all! Hope you get better real soon!!!

Your lucky to have such a caring OH to be looking after you and everything else.

So is this just from the injury with the wheelbarrow or have you done something else since to make it worse?

My mum nearly broke her ankle when pushing the barrow up the muck heap before, am glad at new yard the tractor does it all so we can just leave it at bottom of the pile.

Such a shame though...you must be in so much pain...get better soon!!!

Been there! I managed to slip 2 discs in my back when I was 17, told to leave them alone and rest till they get better, took about three weeks to get back to being able to move. Managed to slip it again about 8 years later, went to chiropracter - worst thing I could have done! GP sent me for physio as the pain kept going for so long, got given exercises and (fingers crossed!) it hasn't bothered me a great deal now for more than 5 years.
Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks everybody

Amy the original accident was a daft one, having a jumping lesson and taking a stride out before a jump. We were doing very well, until the horse saw a stride before I did and I got left behind causing a whiplash to my lower back. Was more worried about socking the horse in the mouth.

A few days later, back pain got worse and worse and I look pain killers and ignored it and it never really went away, flaring up now and then. Had the same 'ping' feeling as I was pushing the wheelbarrow, again ignored it. It got worse, saw an osteopath, she said it would hurt the following day, but I could hardly move!

If a back pain does not go after a few days, see a doctor!

Nicnag - one disc is bad enough, let alone two! how did you do yours?

Hi all

I was off work 3 days last week as my back 'went' whilst getting out of a chair. I am still in pain now, can't stand for long and can't sit for long and just feel stiff in lower back with the odd nipping sensation in lower back which goes down the legs. I can't lay in bed as the pain over my upper back muscle is bad and the muscles seem to spasm.

I keep saying not bothering with going to doctors as will just end up doing exercises and physio at hosp as that is what they normally prescribe when my back goes. I've not bothered going to docs this time as nothing ever works.

Just reading the above and wondered how you know when a disc has gone? i've always just put mine down to muscle pain? What exercises do you do to strengthen your core muscles? Basically I have been ignoring the symptoms!!

Hope you get well soon!

x

Oh poor you!

The muscle spasm in your upper back will be in sympathy to the pain down your leg and lower back. It sounds very similar to how mine started.

Pain down the leg is sciatica.

I didnt know the disc had gone, I am lucky enough to work in an orthopaedic department and somebody there kindly looked at me and made the diagnosis, I would have taken loads of pain killers and carried on otherwise with a muscle strain.

I really think you should see somebody, just to be on the safe side? Do you have a burning pain in your buttock? (Sorry to ask)

I also hope you get well soon too

x

I think I will get an appointment with my doctor! I do get the burning pain but its between my lower back and my buttock kind of area, if you understand where I mean! Just thought that was part of the muscle pain. Did have pins and needles in hands and feet last Monday a day after my back went, that only lasted a day so didn't worry too much about it. Like you, pain killers and continue on!! MMmmmm me thinks visit to docs soon is a must!!

Thank you.x

I did mine by jumping a 17.2 horse in a 18" saddle with mens length leathers and stirrups, got asked if I wanted to jump on a horse the owner was too scared to jump, I was 17 and would get on anything, horse jumped fine but put in a massive buck on landing, I'd have been more secure bareback and went sailing through the air landing on my back, I'd felt it ping but still got back on (adrenalin I suppose!) and repeated the whole thing all over again, bigger ping on landing that time! 2 dics herniated and very painfull!
The last time I did it all I did was bend down to pick something off my living room floor!

Carma, please see your doc, sounds v similar to my symptoms. Let us know how you get on.

Am now wondering how many horse people this happens to and they do not even know about it thinking, like me, that is a muscle strain.

I did the original injury jumping too, 10 years ago, and had intermittent problems since.

2 has gotta hurt!

Poor you, bet you are so careful now having had it go picking something off the floor.

I am booked in for the docs on Tuesday morning so will let you know how I get on.

Mine all started when I was 16 and my horse reared up and fell over backwards on me, that was 22 years ago! You just get used to having some kind of back pain and don't ever think it could be something serious! Thanks for all good advice.x

Yes its true you get used to the pain and the occasional Ibuprofen and just get on with it!

Am happy you have an appointment with your doctor, remember to tell them all your symptoms and about the accident 22 years ago.

I hope you get this treated and you are as good as new in no time.

Keep us posted. Thinking of you.

I have a list a mile long for the doc!! It has been treated many times at the hosp with various treatments but just always comes back. Never fully without the pain, and just once or twice a year my back will go totally! Do want it completely gone. Rode my new boy for 1st time in nearly 3 weeks today and was worried he was going to mess about and make it even worse but he was brilliant! What a good boy!!

How are you managing at the mo? Any better or is your OH still doing everything for you?

Hope you have managed to get out to see your horse. x
