A dog I am interested in adopting sometimes limps on its back leg which, I am told, may be down to weak knees/slipping knee caps. I've been told this is a common problem in terriers and may require surgery. Does anyone know the approximate cost of the surgery?

My Yorkshire Terrier (a rescue) came to me with a luxating patella problem. He was 8 months. Over the next year or so he outgrew the problem. I put it down to him getting fitter and muscling up which I think helped to stabilise the joint. If the dog you are adopting has been in kennels he may not be all that fit and maybe he will improve once he's getting regular exercise, so it might be worth giving it a while after you get him home before rushing into surgery.

Some terriers manage quite well without any treatment, heavier breeds manage less well. The surgery is quite extensive and requires a very long rehabilation period.Rest means exclusive cage rest and weeks of it dfollowed by very careful lead exercise.Without that in mind and followed to the letter operating is a waste of time. Some vets are better than others at stifle ops, Clayton Jones in Kent is IMO the absolute best.

My JRT has always hopped on her back legs. Not all the time and not always on same leg. It never bothered her though. She is now about 7 and was lifting one leg more and she looked in pain. she has now been diagnosed with arthritus in her leg. With medication she isnearly as good as new.

Jakey (German Spitz) had this when he was younger but outgrew it all by himself without any problems. Pookie (JRT) also has it but doesn't seem bothered by it at the moment.
