Passing a horse out hacking the other day shod all round that spooked badly - poor thing was like she was on ice - has only confirmed to me that barefoot is far far grippier. I always remember that slip 'rasp' sound as Saf momentarily lost her footing on tarmac downhill when she was shod in front. Never happened since taking them off. Must be a bit scary for a prey animal to lose it's footing like that.
