Slippy lorry ramp when wet

My 3 .5 lorry ramp is very slippery when we wet. It has metal slats across it, but I’m slipping in between. Is there anything I could stick on it to make it less slippery? I’m reluctant to start screwing into it and I haven’t actually got the funds currently to get a new ramp and it’s only six months old anyway.

Yes it’s rubber with metal slates
In the past, horse box matting was often coir, screwed through the ramp, the sort of coconut fibre gymn mats that used to be seen in schools.
I knew someone who got two old ones from a school, and basically slung them on her ramps, heavy and didn’t really move, then rolled up and shoved in the living while travelling - deadened sound and did the job, but was a lot of effort. My ramp has very thick ridged and grooved rubber, with an extra thick, proud, rubber ‘slat’ horizontally about every 12 inches apart. It’s designed for the job and very grippy - you might be as well contacting trailer manufacturers about buying a proper ‘replacement’ rubber mat, then having that fitted, than diy. Hope you get sorted out!

Agree the old fashioned coir was far less slippy but absorbed water and made the ramps really heavy.

Well grooved rubber with the slats is your best bet. Is it a half height ramp? They're steeper but guess you can't change that.

Bare in mind adding better rubber or coir is likely to reduce payload and 3.5t don't have much to play with.

I had some really good matting on my ramps, but cant remember where it was from and its hard to describe . An easy fix would be to screw wooden or rubber battens on top of the existing covering .

i remember the coir!! that was good stuff, i had it nailed on my first lorrys ramp

I have liquid rubber on mine, its lasted 5 years so far, and seems a lot less slippy than matting

Yes my ramp (albeit a bigger lorry) has carpet not coir. I have been known to hoover it. Hving a chat with the builder is a good idea as they may be able to tweak without adding much weight or costing much.

This is what you need (black side up)

Lightweight and REALLY grippy. Pain in the a*** to brush, but worth it because it is never slippy. Don't get the cheap version, it really isn't as good.

I used a spray adhesive like this to bond to Buffalo board - I'm sure AJ Horseboxes would advise you on the best stuff for bonding to existing rubber

Grip tape (sometimes called grip strip) for skateboard decks. Self-adhesive, just make sure that the ramp is thoroughly cleaned, degreased and dried.

Anti slip paint for metal stairs.
